The GPZ failed on a couple of wee ickly things, most of which we can fix ourselves, but the major fecker was the rear shock needs replacing or re-built.

Can anyone recommend somewhere online for parts, or better still, someone in the Glasgow-ish area that can do this?

Ta.

Hi

Rear shock is not difficult to change. The problem is that you may as well grease all the linkages when you do it, and the centre stand obstructs the bolts for the front link when in the down position. I had the rear suspension apart on Charlottes GPZ on Friday and used a pair of car axle stands under the bottom frame rails to support it.

On Charlottes bike we have a Hagon shock fitted. These are best described as good workman like shocks rather something designed for the track. They can be rebuilt. There are some cheaper replacements around (Betor I think do one). Quick look finds these people who have a Betor shocks for the GPZ for £135 including VAT, but no idea how good these shocks are.

There are people around who can rebuild shocks such as Revs Racing in Halesowen, but then the bike is imobile for a few weeks while it is away being done.

Might also be worth trying Kawasaki as you never know they might be cheaper (for example, Yamaha original shocks for the XJ600 Diversion were cheaper than most of the pattern ones).

All the best

Keith

There's a few places that I know of that do work on Kawasakis;

Bikerite, Dalmarnock Road Industrial Estate, Glasgow. 0141 643 2200

Victor Devine, 60 Hydepark Street, Glasgow 0141 225 8100

MCS Motorcycles, Renfrew 0141 561 7521
but they charge £50 per hour for working on the bike and so they are not that busy.

MC Motorcycles, Unit 2, 100 Eastvale Place, Glasgow (next to the railway line at the end of the road and they are the cheapest option but they can be busy because of this!) 0141 334 1674

Cheers Keith / Scotsman Thumbs Up

What the MOT said was "rear shock absorber has inadequate damping effect" so not sure how easy or what would be involved in this if it were to be rectified / rebuilt rather than replaced! Confused

Got plenty time to get it fixed at least since neither of us have sat our tests yet, so not sure what our next move is!

Hi

Sounds like the damping has gone.

If you do decide that you want to get it rebuilt then we have Charlottes old one floating round still. Think it still actually works (may even get through an MOT), but if not would make a suitable unit to get rebuilt without having to strand your bike for a while.

Here is a pic of the rear shock. The spring holds the back of the bike up and allows it to move up and down. The bit in the middle of the spring is the damper and this controls how quickly the back moves up and down.

https://www.alfa-pages.co.uk/TempPicture/GPZ500Shock.JPG

It is likely that the damper is leaking oil (it is full of oil with a section of pressurised gas as well).

All the best

Keith

the rear shock was what I had to get fixed on the NSR before it would pass it's MOT, and I thought I could sort it myself. Helpful people on here provided advice and manuals and Dave came round to help out but the bolts were so badly seized that there was no way we could get at the shock never mind sort it out. So it might be worth looking to see if you can do it yourself but be ready to have to give up and take it to someone with the right (power) tools!

If you need a hand, give us a shout. I've removed the shock 3 times on my bike.

My top tip is before you fit the replacement shock, go to a car tyre place and get an old car inner tube off them. When you put the new shock in absolutley clart the big adjuster threads with copper grease and cover the rest of the shock in some thick corrosion inhibitor like waxoyl.

Bolt the top end of the shock in place, now slide the car inner tube over it and secure the top with cable ties, cut it off at the appropriate length and fix the bottom too. You now have a rear-shock gaiter which stops all the crap off the back wheel getting over it. They are prone to knackered shocks for the simple reason that the back mudguard doesn't come down far enough, making a gaiter in this way is a good fix.
