PostPosted: 18:10 - 11 Oct 2008    Post subject: GS500 jack up kit? and.... Reply with quote

Few of questions.

Is their a jack up kit available for the rear end?
I've seen loads of lowering kits on ebay, but none to lift it?

Also,if i remove the seat and look under the tank,i can see into the air filter hole?Am i right in thinking something's missing like a top cover?

And lastly; Is their any gs500 specific forums that i dont have to pay for?
Theres www.gs500e.... but all the technical and how to side of the forums are closed unless you pay.(it's not just that i'm tight,i wont own the bike for long so i dont want to waste money joinging a forum i'll only use a couple of times)

Thanks for any advice Thumbs Up

Dave

Edit:Shit quality pic, just posting it to show you my cb500 exhaust can Laughing

There are jack up kits on eBay, or certainly have been.

But a better way of jacking it up is to fit an RGV250 or SV650 rear shock. Better quality, and raises the rear.

And I joined gs500e.co.uk, it's only £3. It isn't a busy forum though.
And yes, you should be able to see into the air filter. Don't worry about that.

If the lowering kit involves (shorter) dog bones then a longer bone will jack up the rear. Its a 30 minute job to change tops.

If you are unable to find one:

Ask a friendly CNC machinist to knock out out for you.

Or

Measure the hole to hole distance of the standard ones and then see what other bikes have a longer dog bone as I believe that the standard hole sizes should be the same.

If its not dog bones then ignore all of the above as I have no idea.

There are some guides. Not loads. Worth the £3 imo. And I hardly ever pay for stuff.

If you can't find the info you're after, someone on there will know, and will reply to you.

The CB500 exhaust looks decent, I'm planning on fitting an R6 race can.

I'm sure that someone will provide the correct correlation between length and lift attained. You don't need a huge increase to jack the rear by a few inches.

I'd start at about 20mm and go from there.

Be careful lifting it too much or it'll affect how far the bike leans on the sidestand and you'll have to mess about with that too.

Should the dogbones not be shorter to raise the rear?

Interesting. My knee jerk reaction was 'no of course not'.

But you could be right, I can't actually find any evidence to the contrary. But I do think they have to be longer to raise the rear.

Also, on the bandit 400, they do jack up kits in 35mm and 50mm. So there's some ball park figures for you.

Quick question....but first.

The standard dogbones are 180mm (from centre of hole to hole)
The holes are 12mm diamater.
6mm wide.

To jack the bike up you have to use shorter dogbones.
I've used 170mm dogbones which will raise the rear by 2".

Just thought i'd add that for future reference.

The question;

The new shorter dogbones i've had made up are only 4.5mm wide, where the standard ones are 6mm.Will they still be strong enough to use?

Thumbs Up

EDIT:
Mod=I just realised this should probably be in the workshop section. Embarassed Thumbs Up

don't use the dogbone method on the gs500,
the gs shock is fucken shit is you raise the bike on that shit shock and feels like a hover craft when you do corners.

use the sv650 shock (the yellow one!! not the newer white shock)
it needs a little fettling,
but is by far and away the best mod for the gs500

if you need any help, tech wise gimmee a yell,

what i dont know about the gs500 isnt orth knowing Very Happy

and im choice ..... just ask me Very Happy

Hello stranger Very Happy all settled in now?

I was gonna use the 650 shock, but that means spending money(ebay says £50+).It's only a winter hack so that's not an option Smile

If the dogbones make things worse,i'll just stick the standard ones back on and live with it Thumbs Up
