What would you say the easiest road bikes are to launch off the line? I only ask becuase i've embarassed an '05 cbr600rr, and a late-nineties vfr800 off the line. The rider has then blown past me in first while i'm in third lol.

But anyhow, i thought 125s were the hard ones to launch. If so, how come i've had bikes with 3-4 times the power off the line? The riders weren't dozing either. I heard both of them snap into first when the amber came on for the crossing traffic.

So what do you reckon? Is it easier to launch a 125 smoker, or is it easier to launch a large 4-poke?

mabee they were just playing you and knew there was no need to try and go fast off the line,
i certainly wouldnt bother trying to race a 125 from the lights,
but i think its much of a muchness when it comes to launching, a 4stroke is probly easier as its got power available down low, where as a 2 you have to rev it and then ride the clutch out,
fairly easy either way

Have to agree. I like to tease smaller bikes off the line by short shifting into 3rd while staying level with them for a few seconds then whacking the throttle open for a 30-120 run.

Thing is, though nobody recognises my bike. Ever. Only one person has ever recognised my bike as a 125 2-stroke.

Believe me they were not trying, its like saying, why can I beat a Subaru Impreza WRX off the line in my Ford Fiesta 1.1 popular plus?

Had a few try to race me off the line on their 125's and to tell you the truth I just can't be arsed to race them. Once you have anihalated one you have anihalated them all. Plus they go on amber most the time, then at the next set of lights they roll up along side and say "I got the drop on you".https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v112/finglonga/Finglonga%20Inc/wanker-1.gif

I've done the Hoghton tower sprint 2 years running. 1st time on the gsxr400 second time on the NSR.

1st year on the GSXR I came second by 0.01 of a second the second year on the NSR I won by about .2 of a second running similar times over the 1/8th of a mile.

So i think it's all about being used to the bike as I've been able to launch all my bikes pretty well.

Your 125 2smoke should be harder to launch than a large 4 stroke as it's harder for you to keep it in the power.

Nah, i never really brag about it because it's fairly obvious that a bike with 5 times the capacity and power can easily destroy mine. But i've raced people off the lights, and i really have got the drop on them more often than not, i just wondered whether it was because 125s were easy to launch, even though i've heard it is easier to launch a larger bike.

I'd agree as bikes 600 and above you just need to twist the throttle, on yours you have to actually think about it.

I remember on the 125 it was often neccessary, if i filtered to the front of the line and then got some knobhead in a car determined not to let me get in front. So i got quite good at pulling away quickly.

Apart from people who do drag racing i think people with bigger bikes generally are worse at launching them simply because they rarely have to. You can filter to the lights and don't often get anyone trying it on. Pull away normally and you see the car behind is already 1/4 mile back.

That's exactly what got me thinking, but then what about power wheelies? On the one hand, if a 600 rider has crap clutch control, they flip. If i have crap clutch control, the front wheel pops up a bit, or the bike bogs a bit.

So surely there must be a fair degree of skill involved in launching a larger bike.

I would say it's easier to launch a 125 and use all of it's abilities - basically red line and slip the clutch 'till the road speed catches up.

Launching a recent sports 600 is a bit more haphazard affair - dump the clutch at too high revs and it'll jump up off the line. Too low revs and it'll bog down for a second.
Some slip the clutch a little to keep the front wheel down and get it to decent revs. Either way, holding the throttle fully open in first will see the front coming up if you do it from low revs.

Litre bikes are going to be worse, because you definitely have to be turning the throttle at just the right rate to keep accelerating hard but not let the front come up.

However, that all said; we're talking making the most out of the bike and it should still be easy to beat a 125 on any 400cc + sports bike by just turning the throttle.

Personally, every set of traffic lights is a race for me, be it bike, car or van; but I'm told not everyone's the same Razz.

Getting a 125 off the line is a piece of cake. You can just dump the clutch with very high revs. If you're trying very, very hard, you might just about get the front off the ground.

Launching a 500 twin like the GPZ isn't difficult either, it's not especially hard to get the front off the ground if you drop the clutch too fast, but equally even pinning the throttle in first/ second you won't get the front up once you're moving properly.

Trying to get a decent 600 off the line in a hurry gets a little bit more interesting if you cock up the clutch and end up lifting the front up when you're not expecting it. Confused I can only imagine it's worse for anything more powerful than a 600.

Ever ridden a 2t 125? I can assure you that it requires a lot more clutch control and timing than you're letting on. I have to slip the clutch for the majority of first gear, keeping the front wheel just on the ground, then letting it out fully (occasionally slightly popping the front wheel up) just before changing gear (clutchlessly).

Dumping the clutch results in wheelies which, quite frankly, scared me shitless when i accidentally got one fairly high (the horizon disappeared)

Getting left behind bothers me not one iota.

Now a Porsche at the traffic lights sometimes tempts me. but to be honest knowing you *can* is enough.

Exactly. I know i should get slaughtered, pissed all over, embarassed, whooped, caned and generally thrashed. But i still give it a shot, and i usually suprise a few people. That and i filter, so unless i want to get squashed by mr van driver, i've got to give it some anyway.

I'll admit, all my 125 thrashing experience was on a number of four stroke machines - underpowered and overweight Laughing . I'll admit a 2t 125 with a decent power/ weight ratio might be a little bit more of a challenge. Even on an underpowered, overweight 125, I could usually still beat 2 litre Mondeos and the like up to 35-40 or so.

I find it's a balance between getting the engine and gearbox synchronised as fast as possible against bogging the
engine down too much. It's not as if I really know all that much about it in practise to be honest though - G should know what he's talking about.

Personally I don't like a lot of clutch slip though, I'd rather not have too replace the plates too quickly. Better to start off at lower rpm with less clutch slip and getting the throttle open as fast as you can without bogging the engine down.

Whatever. A 2 stroke road 125 is most definetly easier to get off the line. A large 4 stroke (say 600 4/650 v-twin/675 triple) will try and lift the front at the slightest provocation.

The other issue is that the acceleration on a bike of that size is so devastating (even my Curvy SV is bordering on the high 3 secs to 60 bracket) that such acceleration is far more of an event. The psychological advantage you have as a 125 rider is that you can only get into so much trouble on it.

I refuse to get into a macho I'm faster than you contest.

Sometimes a wanker in a car will decide I'm riding too slow (ie just over the speed limit in a built up area) and will overtake.

Now that is annoying.

But overtaking them 200 yards down the road puts the world to right.

As part of my be nice campaign though a lot of drivers are considerate.

I always say thanks. I flash bus drivers to pull out and they usually put the hazzards on and give a wave to say thanks.

The hazzard thing is actually illegal, but fuck it. People being nice is good.

Indeed. My mates open comp RM 250 supermoto (clocked at about 3 dead to 60) perhaps, or the KTM 640 LC? I've ridden a 650 Triumph and had a go at a Bandit 1200.

I was merely using my middleweight after test device as a relevant point for data. Even shit bikes are fast compared to road 2t 125s.
