My post (EDIT... oops ..... Lost_Prophet's post) in the pics section made me think about this one, how many people out there would rather have something with a bit of old school cool too it than the latest and greatest shiney shiney 2 wheeled modern road machine Question im biased as i have a zxr but could have afforded something alot newer when i got it (R6) this one just appealed to me more i think

I'd love a new RSV Mille or Tuono, but I get funny about bikes, I think "It's only a matter of time before it gets dropped or ruined"

For that reason I'd prefer to have something older... (I like teapots Rolling Eyes help)

It depends how old school.

You cannot forget the past, but I prefer bikes in the last 10 years than older.

Hi

Think Siggi got it in one. Latest and greatest is only that for a short time until something else comes out. Start to think of a new bike as "obsolete in waiting" and the attraction disappears a touch.

All the best

When I'm ready to buy a replacement bike, I will look at what's available at the time and get the one I like/can afford.

The fact that a new model might be out a week later doesn't concern me.

i think it depends. Some old school stuff is still great, some isnt
Sometimes newer unfashionable stuff can be just as good and just as cheap.

I think its a case of trying out a few things yourself and think about what you'd use them for and what they are good for.. Sometimes reputations are deserved, sometimes reputations are no longer valid.

Id have to be amazingly loaded to buy a new bike probably the newest i'd ever buy wd be 1 year old.

Bikes from a couple of years ago are far more aggresive looking, although a little chunky (with square arses)

If I had the money, I'd like a brand new bike every year or two, but I don't so I cant.

Although there are some bikes that just wont ever go out of style.

Older bikes are easier to work on generally. Not such an issue when scrapping/ crashing them. Won't go out of fashion since there never in. Alot cheaper and less likely to get nicked. Don't make you look like you've just started biking. Aren't tiny little things with high seats. Passengers can walk after being on one without getting out there cramps. More individual. Can do what you want to them customisation wise and not worry about depreciation.

But if you want a new bike none of the above matter Rolling Eyes .

I'd love a harris or spondon special, so i can get the modern sweet handling frame, with the more basic and grunty older engine.

Im looking into using my GSXR1100 as a donor to make a harris magnum this year.

This month's Bike magazine has some large articles about this. Basically there are a lot of new bikes which are quantifiably a lot worse than previous ones, other than having been styled differently. In the case of a lot of them, the new ones were styled worse.

From purely an aesthetic point of view I tend to like newer bikes, post 2000 anyway.

Very Happy I prefer the edgier, sharper styling of more recent models. There are exceptions like the 916 or R1, but I'm not so keen on the older 'chubby' styling, like ninjas, GSXR's. I prefer the svelte look I guess.

It would appear a lot of people on here might dissagree, but each to their own Thumbs Up

Everytime I see a newish bike sports (7 years) in a dealer I always consider it. I would love to own one even after what I said before but the cons are so many more than the advantages.

I'll paraphrase and personalise a little if I may, excerpts from Bike March 2006 edition.

Case 1: VFR800 Fi vs VFR800 VTEC.

A case of Honda using technology for its own sake rather than because it improves things (you could argue that they've been just showing off with all their V4s anyway) . All it apparently does is introduce a nasty step in the power when it changes to four valves at a point in the power delivery right where you don't want it. Personally I think they messed up when they got rid of the VFR750F, that was a beautiful looking and sounding bike; the 800 looks ridiculous with its headlamp design.

Case 2: TL1000 vs SV1000.

The early TL has a reputation for being a beast, but since then the power has been going down and down, while the ride quality and brakes have improved. They detuned it too far - why bother detuning it at all? Confused The TL looks better imo too, the Fazer thou is too pointy and bitty. The TL smoulders away and looks intimidating.

Case 3: FZS600 Fazer vs. FZ6 Fazer

They took an R6 engine and bunged it in the new one, meaning it is all top-end and gutless lower down in comparison to the new one, not what the average Fazer rider is likely to actually want. They also messed up the styling by keeping all the engine and frame plain bare alloy, rather than the original black, which looks far nicer.

Case 4: 916 vs 999

They're both dream bikes, but the latter is pig ugly and uninspiring in comparison to the older one. They also used a conventional two-sided swing arm rather than the far prettier single sided one in the 916 for some reason.

Bike wrote:
FINAL VERDICT
Most new bikes do improve one the ones that went before - even without the ravages of time, neglect and abuse. New materials and design technology mean bikes get lighter, smaller, more powerful, better-handling, better braked - and they run on better tyres. They are better. If only we could say the same of the roads...
Yet bikers are getting older and though it's still vitally importnat that bikes do stuff like go round corners, it's also important that they have less easily defined traits: things that fall under the heading of 'character'. And it's why four of the people here have willfully chosen to ride the older, supposedly obselete versions rather than the new, supposedly 'better' bikes. One thought: does this process mean in 20 years' time we'll all be classic bikers?

Personally, the middle 90's Fireblade was the best one too, and the old Speed Triple looks better than the new one imo. There's also no excuse for machines having worse fuel efficiency and going more slowly than machines produced a decade or more ago. A lot of what has been changed seems to be eye candy and sharpening the designs towards use on a track, driving the character out of them from my relatively uninformed view.

Of course, I might just be being conservative, I didn't much like the design of the '98 R6 when it first came out, but now that I've seen the look of the new one, an older black or red one looks a fair deal better.

And another thing, why are some designs completely unchanged for the past two decades when some are constantly being updated? I know it's expensive, but when you've been producing the same machine for 20 years you'd think they'd improve things like the fuel efficiency and weight.

Much of the decision I make about this sort of thing is governed by simple cost anyway. Second-hand makes sense.

It depends on the bike. I'd rather have a used bike (probably no more than 10 years old) with a timeless design. That way, i would never get bored, parts would be a doddle, and if it's going down the road, then ait isn't as bad as chucking a spanking new machine down the tarmac.

Having said that, there must be a special feeling that comes with seeing a new bike glistening in the showroom, and then having it arrive at your front door without a single mile on the clock.

My first two bikes where brand spankers. NEVER AGAIN. All that happens is you either bin it and have to sit in front of T.V getting drunk for a week before you can face trying to fix it, or you keep it as new the best looked after bike in the world and get very little of the money back you have payed for it. Definatly my next will be second hand.
