Tattoos...

Completely new to me... Know jack sh!t.

Always fancies a tattoo. Planning on getting one when I'm a bit less strapped for cash. But I'm not really sure on things.

I know this all depends on size,
(I'm thinking something tribally on right shoulder? Nothing big, about 6x6cm roughly...)

- How long...
- How expensive...
- Do you design it yourself or pick from a Chinese takeaway menu?

Also be good to see some of BCF's tattoos? (If there's anything like that dragon tattoo I saw posted a while ago I don't want to see... Some of you will remember.)
Do you regret getting them (Older members of the forum)?

I wouldn't go for tribal, way to common, when summer arrives you'll see alot of blokes wearing their tight white gym tops with the tribal running down there arm

you can do either with the design, prices vary per hour depending on where you go.

I have a few small ones. 3 I drew myself and a kanji symbol I got when I was 16. They are all very basic, however I've seen your artistic talents and I'd say you'd be better off designing a few medium size ones. Decide which you want and wait a year or so to "double decide".
I love all mine, including the generic Kanji one (it reminds me of a time when I was less patient, ignorant and young). They are quite plain at the moment but my plan was always to expand them all into one big collage of different stages of my life and how I felt during those moments. One day a criminal psychologist will profile the significance of each one and record it in a journal.

I may have uploaded one or two of mine on here, however I recently formatted this laptop due to virus so can't upload any pics without going round and nicking them from my ex's laptop.

Get one, then you instantly want more, you've been warned, i've had both my wrists done in chains an script and it gets a bit of attention when paying for stuff as i'm a little baby faced bastard lol.

Think long and hard about what you want, it took me ages, i'm designing my next one though now, my 1st ones are a common uncommon thing.

Im not overly attracted to them, chain and sprockets just seem a cool idea but not overly sure, plus the artist would have to be pretty good to pull it off, I've been thinking of a little microfiche engine or something like that.
Oh and you can't go wrong with skulls haha.

If planning a tattoo then here's a few tips (just IMO you understand)

1. Get it in henna first and live with it for a while before getting it permanent.

2. Get something unique to you, don't follow the crowd.

3. Try to get something you can add to. This to reflect your journey through life - like the Maori's.

4. Depends on your lifestyle but something that can be hidden by a shirt/t-shirt will not damage your employment/promotion prospects.

5. Avoid names, even Mum, unless they're the names of your children and you don't intend walking out on them.

Like I said, just my thoughts.

If you want something non-permanent that's a little different then go for a piercing. As above, those that can be hidden by clothing are preferable in the job market. Don't knock a PA unless you've tried it, or let your girl/boyfriend try it (see what I did there to be politically correct )

I am 53 and have been tattooed since I was 17, I was of course told that I would regret it when I grew up. They were either wrong or I have not yet grown up yet as I continue to get the occasional bit of work.
If I can offer a bit of advice...
1. go big, if you can only afford £100 of work discuss with the artist and get £100 of outlining doing and go back to get it finished when you get more cash.
2. One day you will get a job that requires you to wear a shirt and tie, make sure that so dressed no ink is on view. I was on an interview panel last year and three of us had ink, the only ink that could be seen was on one of the candidates and she did not get the job.
3. Only let an artist you like touch you, being tattooed should be a positive experience.

I wouldn't do names ever. Understandable if you love someone a lot, but I have and the love did fall apart, in a huge ball of fire and hate.

Something personal to me, and that I can develop. I like the sound of it, time to get out the sketch pad.

Artist I like? I don't know any!

Maybe tribal isn't the way to go then, or maybe link it to something that in my life.

Hmm...

EDIT* I know about the job situation, the job I'm in at the moment requires me to wear a tie and shirt. They're really strict about piercing, tats, dyes etc... But they are a upper class retailer.

Lots of good advice here, but what you need to do as well is spend some time in and around some tattoo parlours.

Spend time getting to know tattooists, and their abilities, before you have anything done. Don't commit yourself to the first one you see, or even to one that your mates have recommended.

Check out their websites, have a look at artwork, see if there are videos of them working.

Go to a few shows, exhibitions, that sort of stuff. I'm not sure where you are based, but I can highly recommend London Tattoo Show in September - or its offshoot in Brighton (Jan/Feb) Seriously good shows, with a huge range of artists as well as general bike/car/alternative culture interests.
