Neglected Horse

My friend used to loan a horse, and recently had to give her up to go to college. I seen a friend at the weekend and his step-dad owns the farm, i asked him how the horse was and he said shes skinny and lame, and that the horses owner doesnt even bother tending to her.
So i offered to go up to the farm a few days a week, and try to get rid of her laminitus.
But her owner takes drugs, and she might start.
Am i wrong to intrude on taking care of the horse, and should i report her for neglect?
She was pretty much felt like my horse aswell and so she is like my baby i cant help but feel protective.
Help me!!!

Unusual to get laminitis in a skinny horse. I suppose it could have been going at a flush of new grass. Trouble is, the treatment for laminitis is to starve it.

Shes kept at a farm in a field with cows.
And the Farmer keeps his grass really lush.
Was going to keep her in a few nights a week if i went up, but its not my place to intrude.
Might go up to the farm have a good look at her myself and report her.
But me being me i want to take over and look after her.

And what do you think the sensible thing to do is..look after her myself.. or report her?

I would say report straight away because it isnt fair on the horse, however if thats how you feel ask, if she refuses then report. But if shes got an ounce of common sense itll be 100% obvious it was you who reported her, not a problem if she doesnt know where you live mind.

I'd get the RSPCA up there if you really think it's being neglected.

My girlfriend's dad is always having the RSPCA called out on him because he pulls cows out of ditches by their neck, using a tractor. Tourists see him do it, get absolutely enraged, and call in the cavalry. RSPCA come round for a cup of tea and bugger off again.

Well i've just been up to see the horse.
You can tell nobodies even bothered with her, i couldn't catch her, couldn't even convince her with a bucket of feed her friends were more interested in it than what she was. So i caught one of the ponies to see if she followed and she never so went into the field with the pony and turned her out and chased them so i could see Tiff trot and she did she was ok for a few seconds and then she cantered and she nearly fell on her face
I feel so evil making her run but it was the only way i could see if she was lame as she has always had a limp(from a mended broken leg).
I'm going to find out the owners details and im going to report her, it's not on.


The farmers wife was shocked to see that someone had actually come up to see the horse

And the horse is about 21 - 22 years old

Don't mess about and report the horse to the RSPCA!!! I've not long stuck a farmer in for the poor condition of his farm in general but also the way he was treating his Collie dogs, chained up most of the day with out food or water and in a poorly condition.


If you report it you'll get a reference number to call them back to see what was done about it. If the animal is in a poor enough condition they will probably do something to take the horse. If its not too poor, a warning is usually issued to the owner.

I hate seeing animals in a poor condition, just report it as soon as. Do it NOW!!!

I wouldnt bother talking to the owner, if she is neglecting the horse, she knows she is doing it and doesnt care. She wont suddenly care because you have pointed it out.

I would have reported it right away - the longer you umm and ahh about it on the forum, the worse the horse will be getting.

Dont bother with the RSPCA, contact ILPH they are far better. New laws came in this year but RSPCA still happy with most things as long as they have water even if they are neglected.

If its laminitus then unless it gets of lush grass its pedal bones will be knackered more often than not...

Just give ILPH a call....

well the owner owes the farmer around about £600 for the rent of the stable/field/hay/straw etc so i think the farmers being fair enough to let the horse stay there she has grazing and water and shelter to wander into
