Any one know much about the Yamaha TRX850 ? I saw a pic of one and wondered what they are like ?

Power output? Handling? Top speed ? etc.....

Are they a sports bike ? All rounder ? Its a strange but good looking bike i reckon. Thumbs Up

I've got one myself. Fun, fun, fun. Character-a-plenty. Handles well, but not too forgiving. Forget pillions though!

They were imported officially into the UK between 96 and 99, although you'll see newer registrations on some, due to UK registration dates. You'll also see older TRXs on the road; they'll be the imports, most of which are restricted to something like 112mph (a straight swap to a UK spec CDI unit should do the trick).

The TRX has been known as the poor man's Ducati due to the styling, but I personally reckon that's crap. I don't mind Dukes, but give me the TRX any day (no dry clutch).

They're fairly easy to maintain. Just keep an eye on a stuck camchain adjuster (very minor problem), and some models tend to burn oil, so keep an eye on the oil level (dry sump with sight glass). Brakes aren't the best in the world, but blue spots (R6 or R1 brakes) fit straight on and along with braided lines will be more than adequate.

EDIT: You're looking at about 76bhp, with a top speed of about 130-140mph.

They seem to have quite a cult status these days, and certainly attract a fair amount of attention (including those who ask me whether it's a Fazer Rolling Eyes ).

Check out the following for more details:

Lots of details, all things TRX.

A good forum, a font of all knowledge. You'll have to register to see the posts, but if you're wanting more details, it's well worth it.

Hope this all helps Thumbs Up

Any particular reason why they are no good for pillions? I was thinking about on as a replacement for my SV, I was looking for something with a bit more grunt when I've got a passenger

They are very uncomfortable and the seating position isn't too good for pillion.

wonderfully under-rated bikes..

very slim, so suit people who are short of leg.

Can have a lot done to them to improve handling and engine...

Friend of mine has one that's been previously raced, and it's a peach

Imagine as a pillion being perched on a thin plank of wood! It isn't very comfy on the back at all, but it depends on your pillion. If he/she is used to riding on the back of sporty bikes, then it probably won't make a lot of difference. Watch the exhaust, though - twin silencers - and they're right in the way, meaning it's a bugger to get on and off, especially when the exhaust is hot.
