At the weekend I was driving through London when I came across something that was new to me. In some residential streets, where width restrictions apply, there are mini bollards set into either side of the road (see pic below) that vehicles are supposed to pass through before proceeding.

https://i42.tinypic.com/5ketyf.jpg
After having had my journey impeded a number of times by these obstructions, I thought bollocks to this for a lark and simply drove through the wide bit in the middle of the road. Why shouldn't I? After all, my vehicle is considerably less than 6'-6'' wide, a fact that I had already proved by easily fitting through the previous sets of bollards.
Anyway, I may come to regret my transgression. After being told off by Mrs Raffles, I glanced up and spotted a camera covering the bollarded area.
I'm expecting a penalty notification to drop through my letterbox someday soon. Does anyone know what the penalty is likely to be?

Why is it ridiculous? Its a specific system set up to stop large vehicles such as articulated lorries using residential streets.
If the OP wants to ignore traffic signs and cross solid white lines because he can't be bothered to abide by them then if he gets nicked few will shed a tear.

No idea.
The hatched area is bounded by solid white lines. So entering is technically a road traffic offence. I say technically as I believe the met police class a bicycle going through a red traffic light as only technically an offence not an actual one. So the goalposts have moved.

A council cannot fine you for a traffic offence. However depending on what by laws they make up could be many pennies.

I will channel RogerBorg and suggest you check on signs for the road and any traffic orders for that road and if they are valid.

Why put the restrictors on the side, but put a gap in the middle that would fit the larger vehicles?

Just to get some revenue from fines?

I'd like to say you'll be fine, as there's no question wether or not a motorcycle is wide enough to pass through either side.
The fact they set up a camera says otherwise, though Sad

The reasoning is that emergency vehicles can use the centre gap. Penalty charge used to be £60 but may now have increased in line with fines to £100.

If you ignored a blue 'keep left' arrow and they caught you on camera then prepare your bottom.

IIRC £130 per offence, £65 if paid within 14 days.

Surely the cameras are there to catch wide vehicles ignoring the width restriction and going through the middle... Not to catch a normal vehicle / motorbike?

Failure to comply with a traffic sign. Section 36 of the Road Traffic Act 1988.

It's a TS50. Up to 3 points + fine.

Entering chevrons bounded by a solid line is forbidden. Those gaps are there to allow access by energency vehicles which have an exemption.

I agree with him. I've lived in 4 countries and visited close to 20% of the world now. I grew up in a little village and spent about 12 years in and around London.

Name a better city... one that has as much choice, as much to do, as good transport*

yes, London really does have good transport when you compare it to rush hours in other cities rather than tourist time in the late mornings...

The hatched area doesn't seem to match any of the diagrams in TSRGD.

Not that it matters, the keep-left is unambiguous and you're boned.

The revenue must flow.

What's the rule for emergency vehicles crossing solid white lines?

I'd heard that Class Ones can only break 3 rules on the road; speed limits, red traffic lights and keep left signs. I'd heard that they can't cross solid white lines so if they come up behind you with blues on a twisty country road they aren't allowed to overtake! But what does that mean for going to the right of a keep left sign? Cos they usually have solid white lines, are they part of the same keep left regulation?

There are circumstances where Joe Public is allowed to cross a solid white line. To overtake something almost stationary, like a roadsweeper, for example.

Don't be ridiculous, as if they would apply common sense and the cameras served a legit purpose Laughing

Fines for driving blue cars have actually gone up to £100 now. Rightly so I say! Bloody blue cars, coming over here, nicking our jobs etc etc.

My bad. They can if they have been given the appropriate powers.

It appears to me the police don't really want to police this area then.
I'm sure this is a slippery slope to privatising fines. Started with councils responsible for parking and fines and now branching out to other money making areas.

I expect the councils will sub-contract this extra work to private firms, the likes of G4S. Then some civil servant will cut out the middle men and just give private firms the right to dole out fines to keep their profits high.

New York is a fantastic city but the transport infrastructure in London does kick its arse.

I'd still rather be in NYC though.

That's one of the big ones that when I say to people I've never visited they go all high pitched and say "really!". I've been to a lot of US cities, but something about the grid systems and lack of mixed use within a walkable area leave me cold. I like to be able to nip into a pub half way through shopping.

I can see a few arguable cases of 'as good as London' - New York and Tokyo (also never been) being the obvious ones. But, this whole idea of "I went on holiday to Barcelona and it was great" vs a city that you actually live in or visit regularly doesn't wash with me.
