Howdy
Does anyone know of a tool either within the IOS or a third party that will allow me to measure the pass-through delay of a packet from the ingress interface to the egress interface?
So the time it takes the router to process the packet inbound in the IOS, switch it in hardware and then process in the IOS again on its way out the otherside. Its the actual delay I am after not the maximum throughput it can handle (which is all I can seem to find!).
Any help would be grand as I am still trawling through google (the number one IT resource!)
Ta

You could 'time' it yourself.
Connect a machine to the switch using two NICs.
Send a packet from one NIC to the other via the switch, and measure the delay.
I'm fairly certain the delay will be dependant on how busy the switch is. ____________________ <Simple> no I'm shaven Jon

I had though of this but there is also the delay of the cables, machine and its nics to take into account. It is purly the routers processing time that I am trying to accertain. Obviously this will change dependant on how busy it is, but that is what I am trying to work out.
Cheers
