Parkers is free and I don't believe it is updated very often. ie different times of the year the value still remains the same.
Dealers pay for the little books they use, why don't they just use parkers?

Narks me when people try to sell their bike at what parkers recommends plus a little optimism, then complain they are not getting much buyer interest.

As you can probably tell I'm not a fan of Parkers' price guide. Razz

Long live supply and demand! Mr. Green

Dealers tend to use Glass's Guide or CAP Guide for realistic values. The reason Parkers is so "optimistic" with it's values is purely because it's for sale to the public, so if you picked it up in the newsagents, looked up your bike and saw that it was worth £500 less than you expected, you'd put it down it disgust. It just tells people (usually) what they want to hear. If you want a true value of your bike, try selling it, or ask a dealer how much they would give you for it as a straight purchase (ie no px - therefore no profit margin from a new bike to dip into).

Sorry just Parkers guide is such a comic..not really worth wipin your arse with tbh Surprised )

And yes, I am a salesman, but with cars not bikes. Middle Finger

Sorry to jump in but you've just hit a main bug bear of mine.

Glass's guide is still trade only. So the only information Joe Public can get is from the likes of Parkers. So then for the dealers to turn round and say the information is a load of crap is a bit rich.

Maybe if the 'trade' was less secretive about their profit margins, less in bed with finance companies and more honest (heaven forbid, is that hell freezing over?) then, certainly in my case, they'd get a bit more appreciation and business.

Ok, rant over.

Very Happy Thumbs Up

I've always used the 18% rule for vehicles, ie. 18% depreciation per year of ownership for an average condition one. It puts my 5 year old cagiva at £1100, but i've seen them go from 800 to 1600. Quite a price margin, but the paperwork, mileage and attention to detail probably affect the value quite a bit.

18% is a bit optimistic , drive new vehicle off a forecourt and you lose 40% instantly.

No i think parker's is a waste of time really. I always go by what people and dealers are selling similar bikes for in MCN etc. There is also no variation for mileage which will also affect used values between similar machines of the same year of manufacture.

I have a what i think is a reasonable secondhand value for my bike, which is low mileage compared to the average, for my machine and model year. I i can get within £100 of that value for it in a few months time i'll be more than happy!

Parkers are cool for insurance claims, though. I think got £800 - £900 for a J reg Nova that was written off.
