Second time I've done them now but thought I'd share my experience's with you.

Abit of a mouth full but really is quite easy, just different.

https://img434.imageshack.us/img434/4803/valvediagram5cc.gif

Desmo valves push down on the valves and lift them back up, unlike your normal valve system that relies on springs to bring the valves shut.

This means there are two clearances to measure A and B in the picture.

A, being the opener clearance is quite easy to measure just like any other valve clearance check.
B, on the other hand is different, not so important either, aslong as the shim can be turned with finger pressure with some resistance then it's normally ok. If it's dead tight or moves way to freely then measuring will be required.

Anyway...

You take the inspection covers and find yourself this...

Just like the picture! Anyway you get your engine to TDC and measure gap A and feel the closing shim.

Gap A measures a little too small. Needs to be 0.15mm and my feeler guage won't fit in, 0.10mm feels a little too loose so I reck'n it's around 0.11mm. No problem! Means I don't have to buy shims, all I need to do is sand it smaller.

You take out a clip slide the rocker across and take the shim off the top of the valve, like so...

https://img423.imageshack.us/img423/7421/dscf00212gi.jpg

You go upstairs to a comfy chair and desk, measure the shim, then work out how much you need to take off it.

0.11 gap measured. 0.15 wanted
0.04 to take of
shim = 2.94
2.94-0.04 = 2.90

So I just need to sand it down to 2.90, I use an honing stone seems to work well and keep it even, used the smooth side to polish it off. I just keep measuring it every 30seconds of sanding to make sure I don't go past what I want.

I'm 18 and can do it, ok fair enough I've done a bike mechanics course, but they didn't teach us how to do this, just how it works.

The first real time I checked them was on the 600 engine, and none of them needed doing, but as it was my first time I wasn't quite sure if checked them right. I did the 600's one again and one needed doing.
The 750 engine which I did today needed 3 openers doing. None of closers have needed to be done, listening to the chibba chabba of the monster forums this seems common.
The closer shim sounds harder because it's a variable gap really, because pushing agaisnt the spring force is variable. Hence why people go on if it moves by finger force.

Yes, in all it's easy, just like the cambelts, infact most of this engine is piss. Need to learn 4valvers next, might buy an engine to play around with.

*edit*
Ooo, a rating by kickstart, Cool .

1970's triumph daytona I believe. There's tons of bits/spares for it! Almost a stable full of it.

Desmodromics comes from greek words about control or something.

Quite easy, I few things I had to change but nothing hard.

IMI course? Nope. Motorcycle Engineering VRQ Level 2, level 3 next year.

Wouldn't mind having a look at 4valve ones. But theres annoying fairing and probably coolant/radiator crap in the way. Got to love air cooled Thumbs Up.

Got a manual for yours yet? Wouldn't mind reading it.

I'd get them done by an expert mate, it's important they're right, money well spent.

Nice one Keith, no worries if it's to much hassle.
