Well then children, following on from my last car advice thread, I almost listened to you kids. I chose one of the cars from the list, just not the one you all recommended.
But now the need for a small family hatchback has gone, as the whole acquiring a family thing has gone out the window.

So. I want 2 seats, maybe more. An engine. Some handing. Lightweight.

I've looking at early MR2s, MX5s, Robin hood type kit car, and to please you kiddies on here, an old Honda CRX. I don't like FWD though.

MX5 - handle great, go nicely, and its a lot easier to carry out work on than an MR2. Just make sure you get a 1.8 tho Smile

MX5, but get a BBR turbo one to avoid hairdresser car issues. Otherwise the MR2.

All the best

MX5

Your own words

"MX5 looks like you could act gay but actuially fuck girls on the side"

The MR2 is a good handling package but you could look at things like..

Pulars, Supra's, Mitsubishi GTO (very nice) FTO? (hmmm)

I used to have an old Mitsubishi Starion Turbo. I beleive it was the fastest 2 litre out in its day. It was the best £300 I ever spent

What is your budget? S13 200SX can be picked up cheap as chips, or for a few grand more you could get a nicely specced S14. Very tail happy and big hp for little money.

I assume the budget is about 2k? Second generation RX-7 turbo are cheap and good. The last of the cars (1989ish) are pushing 200hp with a 8krpm redline. Proper sports cars, are supposed to be great to drive and can be held sideways with ease Wink They weigh in at around 1200kg so not that much more than an Mr-2.

Otherwise I would go for a MK1 or MK2 MR-2 Smile

Mate of mine swears by Toyota Supras.

Not strictly a sports car but you can get them for next to nothing and they go like shit off a shovel.

Damn straight

Get one thats been imported from Japan with a bodykit on. Terrible depreciation, once they get to about £6-7k, they don't go down very quickly. And sure look a hell of a lot better. If insurance isn't too high when Im 25, I hope to get one.

Barry_mc21 has the kind of supra I'm talking about.

My father had one for a number of years. 4 seats but really it only had 2. Not only was it quick but sounded FANTASTIC.

I was considering a MK1 MR-2 the other week. A mate of a mate gave me a passenger ride, compact little thing with a cool dash that wraps around the driver. Not that quick, but once you get past 5k the TVIS roar kicks in and it pulls quite nicely to 8k rpm. Problem with these is you have to drive them right on the ragged edge to get the best out of them, but they are a hoot. Quite small as well incase you need to squeeze between a van and tree on a narrow lane Laughing Brakes aren't great, they rust and above 100mph they become very unstable so I am told.

Cool little cars, may by myself one next year Cool

Got killed by another car though..... Sad

Mk1 MR2, light, fast, and more involved to drive than an MX5.

Having owned a CRX for four years now, I'm bound to be a little biased! Laughing

Out of that list it would be a close call between the MX5 and the CRX, tbh, for me the CRX would always win as I know them better than most cars.

I personally wouldn't buy a Mrk1 MR2, they rust very badly and have fairly weak engines (HGs seem to go more often than on a Rover).
Of course if its bundled with tons of history and you know what your looking for then theres no reason not to go for one, they are great fun to drive and are really cheap to buy.

Call me cautious but with kit cars, I'd want to know who built it as most seem to get passed between a few people before being finished so are wide open to all kinds of bodging and I'd imagine getting parts could be a challenge....

So CRX for teh win! Infact, mine might be up for sale soon.... Wink

I've had a look around ebay and autotrader this afternoon. Mk1 MR2 is tempting, but would need to find a good one.

Its a couple of months off yet - I'm liking air con at the mo, and I'm just about to get 80 litres of biodiesel, which will last me a month or more.

I've driven a very clean mk1 MR2, goes reasonably well and can be tail happy given a bit of encouragement. Less of the image problems of an MX5 but the main problem is most of the mk1 mr2s are rotton now, so finding a clean one will be hard.

Then you're stupid then. Basing your car buying judgement on an advert... pffft.
