If the French wanted to do it, they'd get organised, get 200 bikers with nearly-empty tanks to pull up at the start of the station's rush-hour, and take their time, each going through the motions of taking off their helmets and filling up.
The time lost, enmity of car users towards the company and blamelessness of the bikers would have Shell and BP and all of the supermarkets changing their minds inside a week, I'd bet.

So then why the bloody hell don't WE do that?! Wink

What the fuck happened to British Manners?
Did it go out the bloody window when PC came in?

No I'll tell you what happened:-

1) High school drop-outs with bugger all to do with their lives got a job so easy a chimpanzee could do it (say, that's not a bad idea!). I know there are some good people out there that are nice, but if its some 16 year old fresh out of school watch out.

2) Foreigners came in, learned the words "Which pump" and the basic numbers being displayed on a till and how to use a barcode scanner (once again the idea of chimpanzee's doesn't sound too bad).

You think I'm joking? I bought a Cadbury's bar at a BP garage last night because I was out with mates and hungry - so I picked it up, put it on the counter - the foreigner said NOTHING to me - not even hello. He scanned the chocolate and didn't even ask for the 60p (it was a big bar of Cadbury's I might add Smile) - he just put his hand out as if I was a mind reader and glared at me until the money wa in his hand. I did give the money to him and got my change (didn't get a thank you or good-bye either), walked outside and thought it was outrageous.

So THAT's what happened to good old British manners.

And that happened because people want more money.

People paying for stuff would prefer to spend less.

And of course people who sell things also want to make more money, so want to be able to pay as little as possible to sell things.

I consider it manners to remove my lid before paying, but I don't do it anymore because I had dropped my old lid twice before when paying, due to having many things to carry at the time/fumble for wallet etc. These manners went when it was a decision to be polite or to spend another £250 on a new lid.

I've never been asked to remove my lid, but I have been asked to get off the bike before they would turn the pump on.

I've had that one as well, but only once. I was ready to tear them off a strip when I went in (I can get more petrol in when the bike is upright). I asked why they had asked me to take it off and they said 'We have to do it for safety, someone had petrol splash back when filling up and it went all over their helmet and in thier eyes.'

Fair point I suppose, they weren't worried about me riding off withou paying or even taking my helmet off at all.

Hiding your face has always been rude and impolite in our society and will aways be treated with suspicion and distrust. Ask your grandparents. In their day you'd have had a clip around the ear for such bad manners and no social workers to go and whine to about it.

I always take my lid off when talking to another person. Always. It takes 5 seconds, including earplugs. If you can;t do it in 5 seconds it's not enough practice. The single reason not to is "I don wanna". That's it. Convenience culture meets consumerist ethic. No greater need than that. Welcome to the ipod generation Rolling Eyes

I for one will never judge anyone that doesn't do it, by all means carry on. But I wish people would quit whining about it unless they can come up with a better argument than "convenience".

They are not the ones whining about it. They are the ones being ordered to take it off by some whining petrol station bod.

All the best

Do you take your helmet off in banks and post offices?

Post office, no because I am popping in for a few seconds. Not been into a bank in ages (and I do remember that the motorcycle courier collecting stuff from the bank near work in Derby didn't take his lid off).

Certainly takes longer than 5 seconds to take a lid off, especially with glasses. And even worse trying to put stuff back on without getting water on / cleaning the water drops off your glasses.

All the best

I understand this argument, its never happened to me (as yet) but I think it is totally pointless and unreasonable.
A year back my dad drove into a petrol garage in his lorry and was asked to leave his card at the tills whilst he filled up. He said no, i'll leave you my keys but I'm not leaving my card as I have had it cloned before and I dont want it happening again, at this the man behind the desk said to my dad you don't trust me (he was foreign but that has nothing to do with the price of bread...) and my dad said "no, you don't trust me" to which the cashier replied "you fuck off out of my shop!" as you can imagine my dad got quite verbal and left... Im sure lossing out to over 200 quids worth of fuel may have dissapointed them.
One thing to think about though. Do people who wear head dresses as part of religion have to remove them before filling up? I have never seen them being shouted at over the speakers next to the pumps...
(p.s. at the above, I do no think they should either, I'm just using it as a point...)

I've never had a problem with taking my lid off before filling up, I always put the stand down just incase, I always take my lid off before I go pay because its polite.

I dont think its really an issue either way, if the station is half decent they'll have a camera that can get a bikes plate so there isnt a need to remove the lid.

at the end of the day they are just doing their jobs, why give them a hard time over it?

Probably because he is authorized to wear one and he's wearing it for the security of the banks money. He has ID ect on a tag or something. If some random biker walked in with a helmet he/she could be robbing the bank for all they know. It's common sense and security. Same with post offices.

Err, nope, random bike courier. No special id tag and not equiped with anything special for picking money up.

How about not wanting to damage an expensive lid? When your carrying your tankbag, a rucksack and your gloves/lid, and then have to fumble in your leathers to find your wallet you soon realise you don't have enough hands. When there's a queue behind you, you can here the impatient sighs of those waiting as you set everything you are carrying down on the floor, and then again when you have to pick everything up again.

As I said, I have dropped a lid twice onto a nice shiny hard floor when paying before, and I'm not going to risk it with my TiTech. Convienience? That's not even a factor.

I would have to say I'm the same. TBH, riding around with a mirrored visor and not lifting it as it spoils a bit of the "mystique", sometimes, its nice to take the lid off to have a breath of fresh air Smile

Now we're getting down to it. WTF don't they just put up big "NO ROBBERS" signs everywhere?

Win/win for everyone.

Because that would be an infingement of human rights wouldn't it?

But if you are a dirty, lazy, good for nothing, child molestesting, woman battering biker you are fair game, as we have no rights it seems.

Thats interesting Toby, ive never seen one of those signs at our tesco's either in the store or at the petrol station. Being a Tesco's employee aswell you would think i would know about these policies Confused Ive never been asked to remove it at the petrol station.

My view on it is that to walk in and hand over money, do you really need to take your lid off? Its not so bad with my new helmet with the quick release but with D-rings it means taking of gloves etc aswell, plus the fannying about with earplugs that you have to do. You could also take example from 'The long way round' book, Ewan McGregor had petrol splashed in his eye TWICE so its handy to keep the lid on - just incase.

As for manners, that went down the plughole years ago with the rest of society, the government, Britain itself and of course its people. So why go out of your way to make sure your being polite?

I would not take my lid off

1 cause i would have to take my glasses off

2 i have autocom so it means arsing fixing the mike against my lips again

3 my hair then gets in my eyes when i put it back on

4 takes me forever to get the bloody gloves back on.

so i would just drive to another garage.

Funny enough all the garages round mine dont care (prob cause there are many bikers) so i am ok near me.
