Removing my helmet (and by extension my gloves and glasses) is a big hassle and I will avoid it if I can. However, if I am asked to de-lid myself I will do so without argument, but I probably won't go back to that petrol station again.

I won't, however, get arsey about it. When I'm riding I consider myself to be representing all bikers. It's all to easy for others to tar us all with the same brush and I don't want to be responsible for any extra ill-feeling towards bikers when all the riders I've met in my brief riding career have been such great people.

In any other shop, I'd agree. Petrol Stations are the exception.

If the cashier is offended or threatened by my lid, they need to find themselves another job. It's a vital piece of PPE which I wear.

Stick a jilbab on underneath your lid and then take your lid off for them Laughing. I can't say I've seen a cashier even look who is filling up when they have a queue in the shop before they turn on the pump.

I only take my lid off when there's a bit of totty behind the counter that I want to impress with my ugly mug Laughing .

Laughing Haha!! That would be quite interesting, under your helmet wear a jilbab. If they ask you to remove that, wear a balaclava Laughing And keep going till they just get generally pissed off!! Very Happy

They can't ask you to remove a jilbab or your religeon, the same as if you turn up for your bike test wearing a turban the examiner cannot ask if you are a sihk. Very Happy

I've never had any trouble. I use pumps at Tesco's, Sainsbury's and Waitrose regularly. I always leave my helmet on, but I lift my clear visor up and get off the bike. I then check I have the right amount of cash first (they can see my getting the notes out), before lifting the pump and filling the bike. My numberplate is standard size if that matters.

Maybe its the blacked out visor and small plate bikes they don't like?

Good point, the small plate bikes I could agree with, but would a blacked out visor really make a difference over a normal one if you just rode off without paying? CCTV camera's are pretty crap really purely because they have to run 24/7 basically, so having a clear visor doesn't mean they can see your face. Good points though Thumbs Up

if the petrol stations are moaning about us bikers removing our lids as they cant see our face, why the f.c.u.k dont the ask them f.c.u.king muslim terrorists to remove their head scaffs. they could be absolutely anybody man, woman or beast!! no one would know as all people can see is there eyes, nothing else. so whats the difference?? if i worked in a petrol station id be more worried about them f.c.u.kers than bikers wearing their lids!!

I hate the fact that 8 stupid men's actions have caused such fear in the 2 million Muslims living in England...think about it Confused

Besides, even if Al Qaeda were plotting something, I very much doubt they'd attack a local Esso garage Eh?

I gotta say that I naturally go along with the politeness argument - I just feel it's good manners to show your face when you go onto someone elses premises, even if it's a bit of a hassle. I would actually feel like I was taking a liberty by going into a shop with a helmet on. I think it should also be remembered that it's not just the cashier behind the till. There are other customers in the shop too, some of whom may feel intimidated by heavily-clad bikers who are effectively anonymous inside their helmets.

I wear glasses and don't find it much of a hassle to peel off the lid on the way over to pay. Gloves have to come off anyway to deal with wallet / cards / cash, and I ususally leave those on the bike seat, so I only have to deal with helmet / wallet in the shop.

That said, I don't have the pressure of commuting under a time deadline, where minutes count to get to work.

As for "dropping pumps" etc, I just wouldn't go there in a million years. What goes around comes around, and showing discourtesy gets bikers less respect on the road, where it really counts.

Sounds like 'pay at the pump' might be the answer to most of this Thumbs Up

The issue isn't whether you prefer to take off your lid or not, it's the fact that the spotty herberts and sour-faced harridans that petrol stations employ like to exercise what they think is their right to dictate what one group of customers can or can't do.

I don't care that other customers feel intimidated; I don't care that "all bikers" will get a bad name - I won't be jerked around by minimum-wage inadequates purely for no better reason than "they feel like it".

If I want to take my lid off, I will.

Of course the flip-side of this is the snobbery factor that petrol station attendants are somehow sub-human and are not worthy of the politeness and courtesy given to others in the first place. Same as people who have a McJob and such-like.

A lot of society think people who do this work are peasants to be stepped on.

Oh, they have to demonstrate they meet the requirements first. A lot of stations I use have pleasant staff who get politeness in return.

Could agree more with those two statements really. I am 6'3" tall and reasonably well built, if I went into a shop in full leathers and not taking the helmet off, I could understand fully how people would be intimidated. I usually take it off and smile at the (generally) ladies there to put them at a bit of ease!

So basically throw a fit and make a very dangerous area cos you can't be bothered for an extra minute.
I have beerefused once, just went eslse where as it was close and not urgantly in need of fuel. I'd take my helmet off if I needed to and even thank the cashier for serving me.

Doesn't matter cos you won't be going back there. eh? not not only do you show contempt for regulations and manners, but couldn't give two hoots about other bikers... reminds me to avoid you like the plague..
Thumbs Down
