After watching the gixxerkart video today me and Zim were somewhat inspired to get our arses in gear and make some progress on our own gokart project. We decided to dig up (literally) the superdream engine that was under a big pile of crap in my garden and try to get it running.

After grinding the rust off the generator flywheel and rebuilding the carbs (both of which had been sitting in the rain for months) we dug out the box of parts and tried to assemble it on the floor into something resembling a motor.

The engine came out of a CB250N donated by one of our mates, the bike had been a Y reg (that's the first Y) and was pretty fucked when we got our hands on it, but we ripped out the motor with the intention of using it to build our prototype kart. That was sometime in 2001, since then the parts have sat in various sheds and in various gardens... Until now Laughing

Believe it or not, we got it running! And I can offer a short video as proof. Zim will be along shortly with pictures of the whole affair as well.

Download the video here (8.9Mb)

That's what I said to Zim last night. He ended up telling me that the reason for it was that it had no air box or no exhaust attached to the engine.

Nope, Zim should be trying to find some suitable metal today so we can make a start.

We need to figure out the dimensions and how everything is supposed to work, I reckon the biggest pain in the arse is going to be the steering Confused

I've always wanted to do something like that. When I was a kid I knew someone that built off-road karts and stuff. I think they had three ranging from a 4-seater with gears down to a little go-kart styley thing. Had greate fun driving them about when I was about 7 or something.

I would love to build something myself sometime. Although I should probably sort out a new bike first Rolling Eyes

We built one at school as a tech studies project. 250cc bike engine with the gearbox hacked off, lots of wood, fibreglass and neoprene.

Really good fun until we crashed it and it sank without trace in Portree harbour Neutral
