Ok I know ill get some 'Go have a bath you dirty git' comments but im too gental to say that.
What it is, someone I work with I dont think is very clean.
Nice bloke and everything and I know If I said something bad he will take offence alot.
Working in a Kitchen your bound to get sweaty all the time and maybe smell a small amount after service.
This guy got changed close to me other day and he stank. It wasnt a 'new' sweat smell.. More like 3 or 4 days worth, I had to move.
He is currently going to a skin specilist about a rash on his back
IMHO The skin rash is where you would (and I) sweat in the Kitchen.
If this Dr he is seeing could only say 'bath more' I woud be happy but obviously isnt. Someone else has picked up on this.
What polite way could I say it. Ive droped hints and he dosnt click.

Ok usually i am as subtal as a hammer but this guy has a prob there? has he spoken to you about his rash you could reccommend a medical shower gel that has to be used once a day (i cant remember the name of it, but it works for ezema etc) and maybe see how that goes, also mention the heat of the kitchen dont help to he will have to wash to help that rash. Its the way you say it counts.

Tell the manager of said person to tell him, or tell HR...the buck has to stop with someone. Failing that an anon letter - but be gentle, its not an easy subject to broach unless asked outright.

Next time he mentions the rash ask him what they've said about washing it. Easy way in, maybe he's been told to keep it dry. You could then go on to ask how he's managing if he's not allowed to wash. Maybe a reason he cant wash or not use soap or deodorants atm. At least you'd know then. If not then HR or the boss, that's what they're paid for, and it's less personal if it comes from outside the team.

Does he have a birthday or anything coming up? You could get him a nice aftershave/ shower gel/ deodorant set? Or wait until Christmas I suppose!?

Try standing at the back of a plane most days when people smell of it! I had one passenger get on a flight and he sat a couple of seats away from my crew seat! He sandwiched himself between 2 other men (poor blokes!) and it was a busy flight so I couldn't move them.

We landed and the smelly man got up first to get out, he had been obviously hot and the smell had just got worse, it wasn't b.o just pure dirty smell. The 2 other men looked at each other and said that he had smelt like that all flight with disgust on their faces. I thought I'd apologise, I said that I was really sorry and I would have moved them if I could.

They then turned round to me and said "what are you sorry for? We have to work with him!!!!!" Embarassed Shocked

go gentle...some people do have conditions that no matter how much they wash, it can cause them to have odour etc, and it may be accutely embarassing for the guy, moreso because he has bothered to speak to you about it, I guess he was trying to say "hey I have this rash, I wash, but due to this I smell a bit".

For those that are thinking of leaving a bar of soap and such like, thats not really funny if you are the one with the problem, the guy is probably dying inside!

Be gentle...... Neutral

OK, how about a team of people in full biohazard suits escort him out of the building to a waiting black transit, where he is taken to the nearest BP, stripped and given a jetwash.

Gentle enough? Smile

yes as someone else said, it is probably caused by this rash. As he's mentioned it to you it shows that he's trying to address the issue. It's a way in to raise the subject but if there's nothing the poor bastard can do then you don't want to make him feel worse.
It would be better out in the open though if you can address the subject. He'd probably prefer you jokingly calling him a smelly bastard than secretly edging away from him.

If you are particularly averse to the smell of sweat, what in all hell are you doing working in a kitchen?

Working in a kitchen is a very testosterone fueled enclosed space.

In my kitchen if someone stinks I'll not hesitate to tell the fucker Smile
Telling myself alot of the time.

Tell him, the embarressment with knock him for six and he'll become more conscious about his personal hygiene thereafter - paranoid even -, thinking everyone will be onto him and his smelly ways.

(This isnt the guy who I think smells)
Anyhow, he turns round and says yes it was Aundre. Shocked

I said I thought it was Darren with the rash and he said he smelt Aundre yesterday with the same smell.... How wrong can I get lol
Either way a message is going to be put somewhere for both to read.

It could well be that he DOES wash himself and that the rash isn't what's necessarily causing the smell ... but that the shirt/s he's wearing at work aren't being washed regularly enough.

The sweat that's dried into the armpits of his work clothes could be what's honking.

Perhaps somebody could make a suggestion that all the uniforms get taken home and washed on a regular basis.

You need to be VERY careful these days of telling someone they stink etc in a work environment. If that person takes offence you can land yourself in a world of trouble with severe disciplinary action against you etc.

Unfortunate some people do stink and more often than not it's a case of poor hygiene. A skin condition such as eczema won't be the cause of it though. I have quite severe eczema but it doesn't stop me being able to have a shower every day. There are loads of decent 'non-perfumed' and 'hypo-allergenic' soaps, shampoos, shower gels and deodorants out there.

A good trick is to have the water as hot as you can possible stand. If it's just warm you end up itching and ripping yourself to pieces. If it's very hot you don't (mainly because your nerve endings are now more preoccupied with being scalded then itching Laughing ). It does the trick though.

This persons rash as pointed out is more than likely the result of not washing in the first place - I.e. prickly heat. Sweat is very salty and if there is one thing that will cause drying out (and hence a rash) above all else it is salt. If he doesn't know the trick with the hot water (eventually everyone who suffers from very dry skin will discover it sooner or later) then he may well be scared of washing. It's not nice to step out of a shower to then tear yourself all over - and I mean TEAR as you can quickly draw blood and end up looking like you've just taken 50 lashes in the town square if you suffer it bad.

I can think of no reason why a GP would tell him not to wash during treatment of a rash - eczema or not. Keeping a wound clean is the first and perhaps most important treatment in the healing process.

Perhaps slip into a conversation that you suffer from mild eczema (make it up if you don't) and find very hot water helps. He might try it and then start washing.
