I like to think of myself as 'simple'
Yes, maybe in the brain, but I think I lead a pretty normal, simple life
I am not rich, don't have a lot, but tonight I have realised that I am so reliant on...
electricity
I mean, I know I need it to do things, to power the tv, this and that... but I am now sat here, without so many of the things I need
But, I say need
DO I really need them?
To set the scene, there I was in the kitchen...
making a curry, hob on, microwave on, cooker on, radio on, dryer on, washing machine on, lamps on in a couple of rooms
Then quiet
And darkness
Fak it. Fuse gone. How frustrated am I? No dinner, washing not done and locked in the machine, sky box gone tits up, tropical fish tanks off....
BUT... then I thought as I was sat here at the pc (pc's run on another fuse), how I used to ADORE power cuts as a child. They were such a regular occurence that my Mum had a huge tin of candles, candle holders, matches, a torch.. all kept in a designated space, so she could find it all in the pitch black
I LOVED power cuts. I was safe, cos Mum was with me... no tv, so we just sat and talked and looked out at the eerie dark, just me and her..and the dog
Marvellous times
What caused those power cuts? I can't recall. Was it strikes? All I know is I looked forward to them in an odd way
So maybe we don't need electrickery
Just the dark
And a candle
I am thinking of setting up an emergency box now..yknow with candles and stuff in it. Don't know what else.
Anyone else have one already?
Ahh.. memories
Where's my bluddy dinner!!?? Crackers it is then! ____________________ Courage doesn't always roar. Sometimes courage is the quiet voice at the end of the day saying, "I will try again tomorrow" |

Always have a box of candles under the sink.. old habbits from when i lived with my parents and the power cuts came, best part of it was me and my brothers and sisters started to try and scare each other in the dark.
Also it was so spooky going out during the evening when there was a power cut everythign seemed so quiet
And yes jodie you have done it again and some how stirred up a lot of good memories for me, you do seem to have a knack of having the same kind of thoughts that i do.
Thanks. ____________________ "Its Better To Burn Out Than Fade Away!!!!!!" "Lifes a bitch and then you Die"

We have a power cut once a week when the Key runs out. And we have to wonder down the stairs to the front door so we can stick it on the emergency.
I live in an upstairs flat with a work mate you see.
In a way, I do rely on Electric too much. My phone charger, my alarm clcok, PC, Guitar amps, Sterio, PC.
Its all eleccy. Witout it, id be screwd.
I remember when I was in germany, We used to have regular power cuts. Talking 10 years ago here.
They were fun in a way. We wre living in blocks of army flats at the time. But the army were geeks, and within a few minutes, they had a backup genny which would flood Electric back into the blocks.

1974, Middle east oil price hike, plus miner and electricity worker strikes, added up to power cuts on a rota. I too used to look forward to them, although my parents didn't ____________________ Current: CB500 Previous: CB100N, CB250RS, XJ900F, GT550, GPZ750R/1000RX, AJS M16, R100RT, Enfield Bullet

I seem to remember quite a few power cuts as a kid too.
Always knew exactly where the pack of candles were in the kitchen unit under the sink. And my non-smoking parents grudgingly had a lighter ready in there too.
I guess old habits die hard, and I've done exactly the same ever since I moved out (...erm... 13 years ago... God that makes me feel old ) and got a home of my own.
There's a pack of tea light candles and a lighter in the kitchen unit, and there's a heavy duty torch in a designated place within arms reach of the garage door.
Or maybe I'm just an anally retentive saddo LOL
EDIT : I'm with Paivi regarding the icecream tho'. I knew there was a big bonus to all those power cuts ____________________ 1st bike (Sept'06 - May'10) : 1991 GPZ500S / Current bike (since Nov 2009) : 2003 Suzuki Bandit 600N

I keep going away for the weekend and the electric key runs out while I'm gone
Sometimes there's power cuts at the house of knockage, and I have to run around putting candles in all the rooms till it comes back. The punters quite like it but as it knocks out our CCTV as well, it just irritates me till it comes back on.
Once when I was living in Auckland, they had a huuuuuuuuge power cut that went on for WEEKS, the whole of the central business district went down, and I was working on the 35th floor of some building (Luckily I wasn't at work at the time it happened) ... They shipped us out to some offices in the suburbs for a week or so, and eventually got the lifts in the big building on back-up generators, but I used to get a bit *tense* about using them till it was properly back up and running. ____________________ Not nearly as interesting in real life. |
