I don't know about you lot but I've always been a bit slack when it comes to chain cleaning so I saw this gadget and thought I'd give it a go.

https://www.kettenmax.com/en/index/index.asp

Basically it's a box full of nylon brushes that clamps over your chain that you squirt a cleaner into while running the chain through it.

https://www.motorbike-crazy.com/Shop/ToolsPics/FS/kettenmax.jpg

It takes just a few seconds to get the kettenmax fixed to the chain

https://www.moto.it/produttori/foto/1311-prod1.jpg

Once on the chain you use the metal hooks provided to fix it in place so that when you spin the back wheel the box doesn't move.

I filled the squeezy bottle with paraffin and connected it up to the box and started to turn the back wheel. Squirted down some paraffin and sure enough some horrible black liquid poured out from the bottom into a collecting jar.

I passed the chain through the cleaner a few times then wiped it down with a rag and sure enough I was left with a sparkling chain. The results are much better than I got using a brass brush and paraffin. Plus, it took a fraction of the time it would have taken to do it manually.

Once the cleaning is done just connect you lube to the kettenmax and spray down into the box while turning the wheel. This he lube nice and evenly distributed where it's needed and without making a mess Thumbs Up

I would definately recommend this to anyone who like me likes to make boring jobs just that bit easier.

At around £35 it's not great value but I'm a lazy git so to me it's worth it Laughing

So to sum up...

Ease of use 5/5 - so simple even a mong like me had no probs
Value 3/5 - not great but makes a tiresome job much easier
Results 4.5/5 made my manky chain pretty damn clean again

Here you go - read this article which I've just found which is ten times better than my review.

i have seen these things about, but always though of them as a gimick or just a box that does a half assed job of cleaning your chain and that doing it by hand is a better bet, proves me wrong really. thanks for the info i may invest in one Thumbs Up

A solution to a problem I didn't know I had.

There's me with my electric toothbrush from the pound shop and an fl oz of paraffin.

Add in a dual injector and a Magnum High Capacity Res kit and you can forget about filling it as well! Thumbs Up

does the kettenmax have replaceable nylon brushes or do you just bin it and buy a new one when they're done?

Even better, and cheaper, get a Loobman. Thumbs Up

The side brushes are replaceable, I have no idea about the top & bottom ones, but I presume so.

thread ressurection

12 months on do you still think its a good thing the kettenmax?

Webbikeworld seem to only give it a so so review, in that grit and crap is still in the little the chain

Conclusion
We have mixed feelings about the Kettenmax Chain Cleaner. It is easier to set up once the routine is learned. It does seem to do a good visual job of cleaning the chain, and the chain does look cleaner than it does after using any other method we've found so far. Whether or not this will translate into longer chain life is anyone's guess.

Combined with a scotoiler is it worth it?

Thought about getting it but the price was a bit steep for something you don't use that often.
Ended up with a grunge brush for a few quid, same sort of thing & seems to do the job.

Interesting that Honda say DO NOT brush oil onto the chain. Logical really, brushing the crap in.

Best cleaner without gadgets, paraffin or diesel.

Loobman costs less and oils your chain too.

My chain was dirty 400 miles ago. A couple of weeks and about 40ml of ATF later and its clean and perfectly lubed.
