Alright, this seems to be still with us...

I've done another round of fiddling now, which means you'll all have to log in again.

If you find that there are messages marked as read, which you have not read, let me know.

This seems to happen if there are unread messages in any forums and you either post a message or reply to a PM - after which everything is marked as read. Let me know if this happens to you.

There's your problem Very Happy

No seriously, AOL traffic comes through several different proxy servers and the forum can't keep track of your session properly. You might find you also get logged out on occasion when moving between pages.
