Ok - I think summer is officially over in Cardiff. Wandered out to the bike this morning and started it to warm up while I went to get my gear. Came back out and tried to wipe the condensation off the seat - didn't come off. Scrub a bit harder - chunks of ice start falling off!

Shame really as it's turning into a beautiful day - even had to put the tinted visor down this morning.

Bloke in M+P tried to sell me some buffalo lobster gloves yesterday. Must admit they didnt feel to bulky and felt quite toasty when I tried them on. They were 24.99, so cheap and cheerful, but I've decided to have a look at some others before giving in to the lobster claw look Laughing
Best thing about them was you could make the vulcan "live long and prosper" sign with them Thumbs Up

Dont, under any circumstances buy Buffalo gloves, especially the cheap and cheerful ones. Mate of mine bought some, on the recommendation of shop staff in JT's in Swansea Rolling Eyes .

They lasted less than 2 weeks. There were holes in the fingers and the lining came out every time you took them off. Thumbs Down

I have a long standing hatred of JT's Swansea Laughing but yeah buffalo/akito/spada etc seem a bit naff quality wise, so I'm after the hein gericke ones, seem better made, bit pricey at 40 quid though.

Lobster style ones are awesome..

the best way of keeping your hands warm is to keep your fingers side by side to keep each other warm.. this is why winter mountaineers use mitts, not gloves.

Lobster claw gloves are a good compromise between dexterity and warmth...

trust me.. you will give in.

I've got hand-guards and heated grips, and I'm considering getting a pair myself Very Happy

Buffalo kit is excellent value for money.. I'd agree with you on the Akito Spada front tho Smile

My Spada textiles are my best ever biking purchase! Lovely and toasty with the lining in, cool enough for summer without, and absolutely and completely waterproof, even after 2 years.

Is it just their gloves you found crap, or their kit in general?

I find their gear is very similarly made to Akito, and the Akito gloves I had used to smell very strongly of vinegar when you'd take them off after a run. It must be the lining inside, but loads of cheap gloves seem to go the same way Confused just manky! And they always leaked, and felt cheap and nasty in general.

My £12 aldi gloves are still going strong however, even after an off, and dont leave my hands smelling of vinegar... they just sort of smell like gloves Thumbs Up shame their not warm or waterproof anymore...

that vinegar smell comes from bacteria on your hands, and from the sweat from your hands. It gets trapped between the synthetic fibres and that's where the vinegary smells comes from, not the gloves themselves. Some cheaper synthetics use vinegary solvents in their manufacture, and that can ;linger sometimes if the fibre cleaning process is skimped upon. But on the whole, it's usually lost against the smell made by hand bacteria after a few weeks.

If your gloves smell.. it's simple

Wash them Very Happy

Its strange though, as I've got gloves I've had for years that dont smell any different to how they did when they came out of the shop. I have some cheapo gloves, that smelled that way after one ride Confused didnt notice my hands sweating, they were more cold than anything...

as I said.. some gloves use fibres that are made with an ethanoic acid base solvent.. so on some gloves there will be a faint vinegary smell from day one. this usually fades over time, as the gloves are aired.

However, after that; If the fibres are susceptible, then sweat and bacteria that get trapped can make the same smell.

The south has had some really nice sunny days with the odd chill here and there.
Left home for Joshs nursery at 8 and hell I froze my ass off. It was really sunny, just no warmth!
Ice was around before I left but had gone by time I left for work.
Bike took ages to start, then going into 1st I would conk out Evil or Very Mad

Was out on mine this morning too, bike temp didnt get over 65 degree's. And it can only get worse Laughing nice sunshine and blue skies today however.

If you think we've had a drop in temperatures, check out Stockholm's weather forecast. I compaired theirs with ours a month ago, and they were a good few degrees higher than us, now they're lucky if they get 5 deg. C in the day!

Just the mornings that are a little chilly now, coming home isn't too bad.

My biking season ended weeks ago - Just memories of knee down track fun to keep me going!!

I'm up in Oulu in the North of Finland. We had -15C this morning and the forecast is for -26C tonight!
