I've decided to replace my old curtains that let in loads of light, so today I went and bought some material.

G's lending me his sewing kit but before I start is there anything I should know? It seems like it should be a relatively simple task, but are there any hidden dangers/complications? Thumbs Up

Did some sewing at primary school but beyond that I'm a noob to the art.

Add 50% width to each curtain for a nice hang.

Mind out for the undertow in the linings.

It'll drag you down and you'll be devoured horribly by that Great White of the sewing world: the hemmingstitchus horrendicus.

*rolling off chair laughing smiley*

WTF is BCF coming to?

Bazza being fluffy and Sigs knowing how to sew.

FFS. I'm off to a blackpatch site where I can see some real cave dwelling troglodytes. Jeez.

Er no, but they're quite small windows. Confused

Remember to sew some prawns into the hem. Oh hang on, that's if you don't like the person you are making the curtains for.

Are you having tab tops, ring tops or ones with hooks on them?

Invest in a good pair of scissors and don't forget to measure and tack before you start sewing Wink

You can make the linings seperately and use a three width tab at the top of the curtains and hang the liners from the curtains (just make sure you make the liners about 4 inches shorter than the curtains.

If you make the hem at the bottom of the curtains quite sizeable (turn up around 2 inches) they will hang better from the extra weight.

One trick for the hems is to pin them, then press them, then when you sew (because you are hand sewing) they won't twist out of shape.

Good luck. I get bored of sewing after about two minutes of hand stitching and you've got a lot more than that ahead of you!! Laughing

I'll be doing the hooks as I already have some from my old curtains and er.. I don't know what 'tab tops' are anyway. Laughing

Not if you pay me a professional curtain stringer's wage. Eh?

I've already done a turn-up thing, might give pressing them a try although so far they don't seem to have twisted. To be honest they have quite a lot of weight because of the material I've used, but want to do this properly. Yeah hand sewing is quite boring but the pain when I stab myself is good for staying focused, I'd always wondered what those finger helmet things were for. Wink I could see if G'll let me use his machine but I could see that ending badly with my hand sewn to the curtain or something. Neutral

Well that's an eye opener Shocked. Didn't realise they could use keyboards or do they have bigger keys to cope being hit by clubs/fists? Confused

*now just scarpers off to hide*

On topic - buy ready made. If light still an issue buy ready made liners too Thumbs Up

*opts for simple and easier, albeit more expensive, life*

Its best to leave the bottom unhemmed till you hang them, that way you can pin them, step back and adjust the length as and when.

I would advise you to borrow a machine, you'll be at it for hours, its not that good being hunched up sewing, your neck will hurt.

Sewing a coin in each corner of the hem will help them hang properly.

My tip no 1: When buying material for curtains, check if it shrinks after washing. My ready made Habitat ones shrunk by almost 20% instead of the alleged 10%, so don't trust the figures given by the labels or shop assitants.

Tip no 2: Forget making curtains, go and buy some Venetian blinds instead!

"Fiddly"? The more modern girl closes them and dusts them with an ostrich duster or a vacuum cleaner, and perhaps once a month cleans the slats when they're open to get the entire depth of the slat.

might be easier to hem them with that bonding stuff you use for reparing hems. These days it is often cheaper to buy ready made, especially if you can bear to go to TJ Hughes or similar.

Thumbs Up although I think that's an actual trade name. Same stuff goes by different names.

However, on topic, for curtains may find material too heavy (depends what you use) for it to stick. Also if stuff put in the washing machine then it can unglue itself.

Don't ask how I know about the above Embarassed
