two questions in one:

#1 can anything be changed , ie the facist totalitarian machine that the government is rolling out.

Considering governments renege on anything, more police powers are being rolled out , ie give us your finger prints or be arrested, give DNA or be arrested etc.

#2 is emigrating the only answer to point #1.

And yes the grass is greener ,

Many many people I know are making plans to leave already , hell many even on BCF have.

any thoughts?

The finger's often pointed at the government; for me I see the problem coming from the people.

At the moment the New Labour government seems to made choices based mostly on what it thinks the electorate will 'accept' and not lose them too many votes, whether that be the right thing to do or not.

Generally they are careful to make changes only a little bit at a time; meaning that we don't care enough to have another little freedom removed.

But #1; yes a difference could be made I reckon; however it'd be a massive amount of work to get enough people motivated enough to make a real and sensible difference.

As global communications are becoming easier and easier difference are going to become less.
A lot of other countries have their own issues.

The world has changed massively in the last 50 years and is going to change a lot in the next 50 as well I expect.

So #2; possibly yes in the short term if you can find the right place.

Halle-fucking-lujah!

G, you've made my day. So many of the dear sheeple sit and whine without realising that it's fundamentally their fault Evil or Very Mad

But hell no, it's always somebody elses fault, it's always their problem to fix. Is it really any suprise that when faced with a nation bleating "They should do something about it" that someone/s with the urge to control and direct things to their own agenda will step in and start doing something?

The only way it will change is if many many people get involved, ie million's. Mass revolt basically, do as the French (and most other European country's) do but on a larger scale. It would also require something extremely serious to make the politician's change their mind, think along the line's of Oliver Cromwell, but not the Muslim way.

The grass may or may not be greener, the only soloution I can see is to make your own furrow/isolate yourself in certain way's. If I was to do this I'd do it in a country which was alot more open and sparcely populated personally.

@G, it may be the majority of people who ask for thing's to be done and sit back when it's turning into a situation they do not necessarily like. However this doesnt make it any more right for government's to take advantage of this situation.

Theyre job is to make the quality of life as good as possible for it's public.

IF, IF and its a big IF, I could persuade my entire family to upsticks and come with me, I would very possibly move to Nelson (north part of the South Island of NZ), because it was beautiful there. But not sure emigration would let all the old folk in....

I remember reading (I think it was in Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance) how people in america were encouraged to overpay their tax bills by one cent as an act of civil disobedience. It doesn't sound like much, but each inexact payment caused the batch jobs to grind to a halt while each total was double-checked and logged.

The main problem with this government is that they're going to some rather extreme lengths to exploit technology to oppress people, while a much smaller investment in the technical infrastructure of the inland revenue, dhss (or whatever they call it these days) or various branches of the civil service could markedly improve people's lives.

Last I checked, the data protection act still entitles us access to any information held about us by any organisation. If enough people regularly exercised that right, then it would be far too much of a bureaucratic headache for those organisations to bother snooping on us in the first place. How could a borough maintain cc-tv cameras for an area if they received a hundred requests a day from random people demanding copies of videos taken of them? How could speed cameras be kept in place if every single driver demanded to know whether there were pictures of their car on record? How could congestion charging work if every single driver in the congestion charge area demanded to see all the logs of their vehicle passing through london?

There are probably a few problems with that particular strategy, but I'm sure something along those lines could go some way to undo the damage done over the last few years. It's not nearly as satisfying as a bloody anarchic revolt, but it's likely to be practical and within our means. Simple things like claiming on the customer charter if you're delayed on the tube or filing complaints about police vehicles you see driving dangerously. If anyone has any tips, then it'd be great to hear them

Fucking A. What he said. It bugs the tits of me the way I have to pay my council tax using a payment method that is straight out of the fucking thirties. It fucking bugs me that the inland revenue is so slow and shite.

Use the technology to enrich peoples fucking lifes not monitor them more.

To a large extent I agree, but people do not act as a group. However what we have is laws pandering to minorities, just because they are a slightly smaller minority than the one they are stamping on. For example, fox hunting. Small number for it, few more against it, majority of the population didn't give a damn.

Hence we are royally screwed as most things we do or enjoy are minority persuits.

Solution? Some way of knobbling the partliamentory process so they can only meddle in things that most agree with.

All the best

Keith

Nelson and the surrounding areas like burnley etc are absolutely holes and would not live there if i was paid.

Never mind being under 100k most houses are under 10k.

Last time u was unfortunate enough to be there about 4 years ago most houses were boarded up and you could very easily have been back in the late 19th century

Knock it down and start again!

A few years ago, back in my film-job-hunting days, I was considering emigrating, basically because I couldn't find work in the UK. But then I came to the conclusion that film work wasn't what i wanted to do, and I now have a career job that I enjoy here in Scotland.

However, the emigration question has come up again recently. I find myself getting more and more annoyed by the state of the country, and the decisions made by those in power, how much I have to pay in taxes and how little I seem to see for my money. I've seen better quality of life in other countries....

So despite having a career I'd quite happily have for my whole life, and despite loving Scotland as a place (deep down I don't think I could ever not love Scotland..) I am beginning to think seriously again about heading off to live somewhere else Confused

(hello again btw, I've not been about for quite a while! Smile )
