hi all,

as the 2 years restriction is finallly up ( Thumbs Up Mr. Green ) i have decided to part with the bandit and venture into the world of sports bikes. But there is sooooooooooo many to choose from! however one thats caught my eye is the 600 SRAD, simply cause the looks and the price. I was wondering what peoples thoughts and opinions were on these, my boss at work says they are a bag of shit basically, but something about them seems to be drawing me in. Whats your thoughts and opinions? thanks all.

Thumbs Up Mr. Green

FATRAD you mean? Wink

Seriously, Suzuki loves his. It's been somewhat abused by him, but still keeps going.

That fat rear end has one major plus point. In an era where you can barely get a fag paper under the pillion seat of some modern sports bikes (ZX6-R, 675), you can get a takeaway, a set of waterproofs, a disc-lock and a U-lock under the rear seat of an SRAD. I can get everything I need to take with me for work under there if I pack carefully. It also has decent luggage hooks if you use a tailpack, and a metal tank for tankbags.

It's still a modern-ish (alloy frame, 4-pot brakes, adjustable suspension) sportsbike. Although considered uncomfortable and very track-focussed in its day, it's not that full-on at all compared with the current 600's. I can stay on board until I need fuel as the seat is plush, and it's a short reach to the bars. Only high pegs limit comfort really.

The main issue is build quality. They take a bit of looking after. The engine is very reliable though. The DiRe survey said it was surprisingly reliable for an older, yet often hard-ridden bike. brake discs warp, quite a few parts corrode if not cared for, some minor electrical gremlins. It suffers from carb-icing when it's cold and damp.

I did 3000 miles in 3 months on one over summer. Could go quick when required, albeit with lots of revs (I'm used to bigger bikes), and still has decent handling, with quick steering. Suspension is quite plush but controlled for road use. Fuel economy can be >40mpg and tank range 150miles when in touring mode.

For the money they go for, I'd say if you can find a good one in original condition, they make a good buy. However, any equivalent 600 would make a good buy too - just get whatever you can find the best example of for your money.

Meh, I can get everything a full tool kit, a map, waterproofs, plus a chain, disc lock and a gas cooker under the seat of the sexy, sleek rear end of the CBR400. In fact on comparison, the CBR has more underseat space than the gixxer and it looks good Razz

You wont go wrong with a GSXR, SRAD or otherwise.

See if you can blag the insurance and extend to the 750, which is like the 600 but even better.

SRADs are cheap, look good, handle great, and are really reliable provided you service them correctly (like anything else).

go for the newer K series if ye can.

Lighter, better fuelling. Still fit rain suit & gloves under Pillion seat.

Add a power commander for a smoother ride. You`ll never look back Thumbs Up

its gona be ALOT!

Well over 100bhp IIRC and with a restricted licence it not always best to go for such powerfull bikes.

for example im 18 with 1 years ncb and 1 accident to my name and to insure my hornet 600 (70 - 80bhp) is going to cost between £1000 - £5000.

my licence is no longer restricted mate, and i paid £390 tpft for a bandit 600 last year, when my licence was restricted with 3points, so i would say you are getting ripped off dude.
