Well I think this would be the right place to put this question.

I noticed a while back that someone did a trip to france possibly with some other members of this forum. Anyway the person with the GPS managed to keep a log of all the roads they used.

Then they were able to show the route in Google Earth. So how do you go about getting that information from your GPS?

Hi

Many GPS units are capable of outputing their data in the form of an NMEI log which can then be decoded. Done this with a Bluetooth GPS unit and a PDA, recording to an SD card in the PDA.

All the best

You are probably thinking about our little trip with Feef, Niff, Mike and Ashmatt. Feef was using a Garmin GPS unit which keeps track of your route (untill the memory is full). This track can then be downloaded in to the software you get with it (Mapquest I think) and converted in to a Google Earth route. Cool
I've no idea which Garmin GPS unit Feef was using, but I'm sure he will be along at some point and let you know Thumbs Up

yup..

I was using a Quest2, although I believe it's a standard feature for most Garmin units.

When you connect it to your PC, Mapsource allows you to download tracks, waypoints and routes from your GPS to the PC. Once in mapsource, you select the track you want, and then the View menu has a "view in Google Earth" option, which automatically opens google earth with the route in place.

Once in Google Earth, you can select the specific track(s) and 'save as' a .kmz file so anyone else can load it into Google Earth themselves.

Thanks for the replies guys.

I had a look on the Internet NMEI log but I couldn't find much information on it. What I did find was that most of the results applied to Garmin.

I have a TomTom Rider and I hooked it up to my computer to try and find a log file of some sort. Maybe it isn't possible to retrieve a log file from TomTom GPS's.

Still it would be nice to know how do it in the future as it was quite interesting seeing the route you took on your trip to France.

*edit* Just seen the reply above, Cheers
