Hi guys,

I was talking to my dad yesterday about a US WW2 ship that sunk just outside the Thames estuary. The one with the unstable explosives on that everyone's petrified to touch.

Can anyone remember it's name, or know any websites on it?

Thanks! Thumbs Up

USS Richard Montgomery!

Had to go hunting through lists of sunken ships to find it.

Hmmm... 3.5 kilo ton's of explosives just off the Isle of Sheppy... Thinking Anyone got a match?

I think they were going to blow it up at one point but its though that the blast would take out every window on the Isle of Sheppy Twisted Evil , used to sail around it alot when my dad had his boat you could only really see the three masts sticking out the sea.

If they repeat this seaon of Coast on BBC2 it was on there.

Have a look!

Quote:
Because of the difficulty in clearing the wreck it has been left where it sank. It is regularly checked by the Department of Transport but surveys suggest that it may break up in the next nine years. But if the Montgomery did explode, Government experts estimate that it would blow up with the force of a small atomic bomb, throwing debris 3,000 metres into the air.

i dont know what effect sea water has on explosives, but maybe some terrorists might want to put a fresh bomb in there to ignite the old ones.

Yeah i watched that too, really interesting. I don't think you should be embarassed about being interested in our maritime history, we do live on an island afterall.

My dad said he used to go fishing off the masts when he was a lad Exclamation Would have been shitting myself if it was me! Laughing

If you saw the episode with the Stingback Ray (If i remember it was the same episode with this boat mentioned), the tag they stuck on it is one of ours!

Great. all we need is terrorists blowing up this ship.

i can't beleive i only just found out, is it as bad as living on potentially dormant/inactive volcano?

i believe there is a couple of these throughout the uk..

The terrorists are hardly likely to blow it up, as they'd be doing us a favour by clearing the island!
