$hit happens, although in cases like this it is avoidable, he along with their family & friends will carry this tragedy for the rest of their lives, that must be punishment on it's own, especially for the father, i can't carry pillons due to my L pates, but after i get through my test, i hope i won't carry pillions often, maybe the best way to avoid something like this is to ride solo..... Yeah fine but there is a *slight* problem with that.

Yes if the roads are clear and you can see far enough ahead I will hammer it. But in towns and lanes you ARE risking other lives. You can easily (just as an example) pile round a corner on a country lane straight into a line of walkers.

Again, just MHO.

well this is it. speeding on little street roads is asking for trouble. dual carriageways and the motorway. go on then just a bit faster Sad town roads and city roads + excess speed = disaster.

i think i might just buy a jeep and drive with disregard for everyone else. seems to be the trend at the moment. "thud" driving through school zone. feckin pesky kids my Anti Child Chrome Stainless steel Bumped With Spikey bits on the end should see an end to them crossing when im driving.

When I'm on my own I ride fast, I love it I have had a few close calls and one crash. Whenever I have someone on the back I ride like a saint I would never put someone who has put there trust in me in any avoidable danger.

i recently had to brake hard on a sports 600 with a pillion behind me. Its one thing taking the weight of yourself trying to move forward over the bars, but when there is the weight of the pillion too, its quite an effort, while still keeping the bike going in a straight line.

I hadnt thought about this before.

So id say sharp braking is quite a problem, unless your pillion is using the grab rail.

Sorry but you have to be aware of your capabilities. If you have a pillion you "know" your braking is affected.

This is why I like the pillion to hang on to me.

Grab rails are fine. But, as I have said before, being a good pillion is fucking difficult

You have to read the road over the riders shoulder.

IMHO

i can see what the man on the bike was doing. my dad does it but in his porsche he beats every car on the road because it brings a smile to his and my face. its what you pay 80,000 pounds for so you enjoy the experience whilst you can.

however, theres no problem going fast just slow down if there is an obvious developing hazard like a junction i mean he didnt really think there was going to be no traffic????

That is the risk we take as motorcyclists i guess... Karma

i think the point implied here is that, you drive within your capabilities to suit given surrounding conditions, and you must know your capabilities, otherwise, learn (but not on the road) before you get on a bike and do something people who know you will be at ur funeral. Neutral

In respect to the emergency services question, my Uncle drove a fire engine for the majority of his working life, and when I asked him, out of curiosity, whether their speed was in any way limited, and he replied "no, the police liked to give us an escort, but they were lucky to catch me," but he didn't mention anything about blame for accidents. Confused

I feel very sorry for this man, but I have to say that although speeding is, in itself, not all that dangerous, racing with a pillion really isn't the way forward... Thumbs Down

Even if the girl was, as someone suggested, screaming 'faster faster,' should she really be taken seriously? I seriously don't think kids that young have any real sense of the dangers involved.

I had my 15 year old sister in the car a few months ago dropping my mum at the airport. As soon as my mum was out of the car, she took her seatbelt off. Obviously, I was unimpressed, and told her to put it on. She agreed, but then moaned about it "not being worth it." To make a point, I took mine off and floored it (100+). She started screaming at me to put it back on, and I said "I thought it wasn't worth it?" She now puts it on every time she's in my car...

Does anyone know where in Colchester this happened? I know the area pretty well (went to school and college there; nearest town) and I can't think of very many roads with a 40 mph limit with junctions on corners...

I do simpathize with the father,
and some of your comments seem a little harsh,

I think of myself as a very safe rider.
whilst out on bike one lovley sunny sunday,
I was waiting at the lights when outof the blue a few of my mates, turned up behind me,
we waited at the lights, reving bikes as a laugh,
the lights changed, we took off sharpish.
we all popped the front ends up for a second,
It was then when i felt the helmet hit me in the back that I remembered my wife was on the back,
she was holding the grab rail,
I completly forgot she was there.
i slowed down and stoped. at the next set of lights a few hundred yards down the road,
I could feel the bike shaking as she was sobbing with fear,
A feeling came over me that i never want again,
the thought of her falling off the back at about 60mph, then getting hit by the bikes right behind me made my blood run cold,
I rode round for half an hour i did not want to stop because i did not know what i would say to her,and i new how much i had scared her and for what a ( little fun with my mates ),

that post seems to me like it could had a very similar outcome had she not head butted your back, not saying anything about your riding, just that you were caught in the same scenario as the rider who this thread is based upon and lost thought about your pillion for that time

Hope you learn from it, i don't and hope not to carry pillion's, purely because i have a minute tendency to show off the odd bit here and there, and would never forgive myself if I caused any incident like that, in any way or form..

Ride safe all Thumbs Up
