Hey,
I know this isn't bike related, but i was wondering if you could give me some advice. (May also help others doing there bike hazard perception)

I've already passed my bike test and did a hazard perception test for that. I didn't know it existed till i took the exam. To be honest i found it very easy then. Now im working on the car test again. I gave up 2 years ago after failing the practical 3 times.

Now i've got a bit more experience i'm finding the hazard perception test hard (I've got a practice CD). I usually end up scoring 0, and it seems i see the hazard before the software. (The software shows u the windows where u should click, after the test)

Plus i keep clicking for hazards that arnt been marked. For example a staggered junction would constitute a hazard to me.

What am i doing wrong? Any advice on how to pass the hazard perception?

The hazard perception test seems flawed to me.
Seems a complete piss take that i have to do another theory test even though they've already gave me a licence to ride on the road. Surley if i don't know the highway code i shouldn'y be riding?

Cheers,
Shaun

Just think and click Thumbs Up

Just highlight anything that could make you change direction or apply the brakes, ie cars in sideroads or pedestrians / cyclists or even road signs.

Easy peasy really Wink

Avoid clicking an area repeatedly, or your score for that clip will be zero. If you see an area approaching that has a hazard developing, try clicking about once every 2 seconds, so that at least one of the clicks will register a score.
That's the technique that I used when practicing with the CDROM, and I managed to pass 1st time. I'm sure others may have alternative strategies, but this one worked for me.

Yes it is flawed, as I'd guess most will agree. The software or system used doesn't seem to have the flexibility needed for the task in hand.

I've had a car licence for some *cough*teen years, so I'd have guessed I have enough experience etc to be safe on the roads by now. However I'm still amazed at how much I learned and how much benefit I gained when I did my theory, hazard perception, CBT and DAS in 2005

once you understand how the hazards are shown, you know what you're looking for. it's quite easy.

the hazards in the actual test arent really little things like a crossing. it's something like you'll see a lorry turning in the road, traffic lights changing. something on the video will stand out significantly amongst all the little pieces.

I passed it without any practice by whenever you see a hazard developing clicking the mouse once every couple of secs, until the next slide. Note that a hazard isn't a change of white lines, it's something blatent like someone reversing out of a parking space up the road.

I got disqualified from two clips for doing exactly that. The advice I was given was "keep clicking as the hazard develops" but I think I spotted the hazards too early and clicked a few times before the scoring window opened, getting zero points for pre-empting the hazard. Bah. Still managed to pass first time though. Don't allow yourself to get flustered if you get disqualified from a clip or two though - as long as you keep your head throughout the rest of it you'll still sail through.

Google for websites that have them. I used a couple but forget the names. You can sign up for say a few quid and it will talk you through what they are looking for and what is deemed a hazard and when to click.

Hazard perception Tests = Revenue for Government.

I clicked when I saw a hazard up ahead, and clicked every few seconds untill it had gone.
I think on the car one I got 60+ but the bike one just over 50 Confused

the hazard test IS flawed , experienced riders and drivers will see hazards WAYY before rookies and thus click outside the zone,

really it should only be used against rookies on their FIRST test , but it makes the government alot of money.

I remember somebody saying see hazard give it 1.5 seconds click , click

I did my hazard thing 8 months ago, I passed it (after having been driving for 10+) years.

As has been said the hazards are obvious, I got turfed out of one of the tests for clicking to often, I also thought (not sure why) you had to physically click the hazard on the screen. It didn't make a difference right enough...

Clicking too early is worse than clicking too late, leave it until the hazard is in plane view, I wouldn't keep clicking, the longer the hazard take to develop the more chance you have of not scoring because you clicked too often between seeing it and then acting.

Aye, it is a shit money making test. The bike test is the same as the car test but for 8 or 9 questions.

(I took 9 attempts to pass my driving test, I reckon you're doing alright Smile

I disagree, I think the DSA should use it as early indication for who will be a good driver/rider or not.

If you can't spot one of those hazards early, you are gonna suck in real life.

I am not saying hazard perception has no place. I just think sitting in front of a screen with headphones on, looking at a 2d image in no way is reflective to real driving conditions. It is completely unatural.

IMHO

A good idea, yes. But useless when 'simulated' in front of a tv.

My opinion - make new drivers have a minimum set hours tuition with a bonio-fido driving instructor, during which the instructor 'passes' your hazard awareness. Any such certification being required before a test can be applied for?

I actually have my car theory test this saturday at 8:30 am! So I will be up bloomin early and cramming all week! I've been practising using a theory CD rom and looking in the book whenever I see I sign I dont know. I havent actually done any hazard perception practise at all yet! Im normally very good at spotting hazards in the car when Im calm but its the actual software and click timing that worries me about the test.

It is a bad test with stone age software that "Space Invaders"would put to shame.
I had to take my test 3 yearsago as the police decided that the Zimbabwean licence I had used since 1981 was not legal in the UK.
I passed everything first time but I came within a couple of points of failing the hazard perception. I over anticipated, it is not geared to experianced riders.

There is usually only 1 hazard per clip (2 hazards in one of the clips). They are very obvious, I was in the same boat as yourself where I was clicking when I noticed a sign at the side of the road. But its usually something like people cycling/walking on road, car in front of the car ahead is pulling over, someone pulling out in front of you/into your lane etc.

The clip with 2 hazards was the mountain scene with sheep running out onto the road. Same hazard of sheep only there is two times they jump out.

Good luck Thumbs Up

I was using some software at home and was getting nowehere with it so I ended up seeing an instructor at my bike school who ran me through it.

Basicly I was looking at anywhere there may be a hazard, which again is very different to the car POV that the software is tuned for. My instructor chilled me out to not indicate thigns that *may be* hazards but instead to note tham and indicate them when they become a "developing hazard" instead.

A developing hazard is something that will force you to change speed or force you to maneavor to avoid an accident.

Basicly I ended up double clicking on each developing hazard and then leaving it. The program looks for patterns.

What I will say is that no one has been given the code the DSA are using for the test so all the practise software on the market is based on the worst case scenario. When I did the test it was loads easier than in practise.

Also. In your original post, have you already passed this once for the bike test? It's my understanding that the Bike Theory test covers you for cars as well because it is the car test with additional questions based on bikes so if your bike theory test is less than two years old you probably don't need to be taking it again. Worth checking out no?

that's the nail on the head. i didn't remember that specific point until you said it there.

you ONLY click when the hazard develops, which would force you to have a change in what you're doing.

to be honest, for all the people who're bashing it. it sounds more like they're annoyed that they didn't get it first time. then adding on a pointless argument like, well we're experienced drivers. we see hazards before they happen.
so? people with relatively no experience are seeing the actual hazards that are causing a problem.
it would only go tits up the hazard perception test were taken out for experienced drivers (because they can't do it), because then it'd be the whole, one rule for one...

Hey,

Thanks for all the replies. Hopefully, with your advice i'll pass this damn theory test.

I was wondering if my bike theory covered my car theory, but i passed my bike test at 18 and im now soon to be 22. So i guess that expired along time ago.

Cheers,
Shaun.

to solve the confusion some have with that (i did too) your car theory doesn't count as a bike theory. nor does your bike allow you to not do the car theory.

the hazard perception tests are the same on both, but in the motorbike questions, they're more specific to being on a bike.

I know the Car rest dosnt count for Bikes because it dosnt have the bike specific questions, however the Bike theory is the same as the Car Theory plus a few bike specific questions.

I shall go looking for my source on that at some point tonight when its quiet...

DON'T DO IT!!!

I did my theory test yesterday, 35/35 for the questions, 45 out of 75 for hazard perception (you need 44 or more to pass), so I scraped in.

I could have got a much better score, had I clicked earlier, but after reading the quoted post above a few days ago, I stopped myself from clicking until such a time as the hazard "force you to change speed or force you to maneavor to avoid an accident". What you need to do is click immediately you see something which could develop into a hazard, then wait and give it another click or two as the situation actually develops. That way you're covered for both early recognition, and spotting the hazard. Just don't click constantly through the test, or more than once every 2 to 3 seconds.

It's not a fair test at all really, of absolutley no use whatsoever.

What arfdog said... Cool

The scores work on a sliding scale. You click when you see the hazard, the points decrease the longer you leave it and you click when you have to act, same thing, the longer you leave it the less points you'll get.

I got 62/75 even although I got booted out of one of the tests. Its an annoying test because you could quite easily fail not for being crap at hazard perception but by just not understanding how it works.

This makes it a poorly conceived test I reckon.

Im doing my theory test at 8:30am tomorrow! Is there a limit to how many times you can click during one clip? I did some practice ones on the below site last night and found that i clicked for one thing that i thought could be a possible hazard, then a more obvious hazard would turn up and id click a couple of times for that too. On that site you couldnt click more than 5 times. Does that rule apply in the actual test?

Pass your theory

Yes and no. There is a limit but it's not as simple as that. One of the ones I was disqualified from I barely clicked - others I clicked a lot more and it let me get away with it.

You can click several times, but just don't waste any. If you see someone walking along the pavement then that's a potential hazard, but don't click just yet. The scoring window won't have opened at that point. If they start to move towards the road, then click. Don't keep clicking randomly, just click again if the situation changes, like if they step into the road (maybe a couple of times just to make sure), and again if the camera has to swerve or brake to avoid them.

By the time the evasive action has been taken there are no points left to get so don't keep clicking that particular hazard. Bear in mind that at least one clip has more than one hazard so don't just switch off once you've clicked for the first one.

Most of all, if you get disqualified from a clip it really isn't a big deal. There are plenty of points left to get so just concentrate and move on to the next one. Don't let it bother you.

Thanks for the advice, I think in the practice clips I was clicking at times like you mentioned when there was a potential hazard in my opinion but it hadnt developed at all. I'll remember your pointers for tomorrow. Thumbs Up (I'll be glad when its done!)
