Too Windy to Ride

Looking at the weather forecast this morning, with winds forecast to gust to 80mph in London and just looking out the window, I took the view it is too windy to ride to work so have cancelled all my meetings and am working from home today. My journey includes a high flyover (at Staples Corner) and exposed places on the North Circular at Welsh Harp & Ealing Common. Last week when the winds weren't as bad I got fairly buffeted so today decided not to take the risk!

This is only the 5th time in eight years when I haven't ridden because of the weather - I'd be interested to hear what other people's views are on today's gales & their riding experience - not just in London!!

I live in an area with flatter land than London, cross winds were bad this morning, the cover had come off my bike and the rain was fierce.

I haven't got the option to work from home.
It wasn't all that bad though.

Thought it was going to be worse than it was, didn't get blown about all that much. Certainly wasn't fighting to stay in my lane like when it is bad.

nothing to feel bad about - Staples corner is one of my least favourite bits of road whatever form of transport I'm on, and our accountant point-blank refuses to ride that way because he reckons it's lethal.

I'd have probably left the bike behind today if I didn't have to travel round london on a few off-site visits, but that's probably more to do with the fact that I really wanted to head out to the pub after work to watch the hibs replay.

But yes, it was very windy. I found trying to stay upright at the traffic lights seemed to be more of a challenge than keeping upright while moving though.

The wind and rain looked really terrible this morning, so I used the OH's car to take her to work so that I could do the school run this morning. (My step-daughter was gutted that her mum wouldn't let me take her on the bike, but after driving thru the weather, probably for the best).

However I still have to get in to work later this morning, when I don't have the option of taking the car cos there's nowhere to park it. So I guess I'll be on two wheels so that I can get into the bike park at work

Hehe, it's funny I thought the same thing whilst laying in bed this morning listening to the wind!

Then I heard the voices saying 'don't be a wuss it's just wind'! I think I was just angling for a day off work... The ride in was absolutely fine!

I've bagged the day off too... I always check the weather forecast out, to see if I need to cadge a lift. Imself is away with the car this week tho, and I saw it was gonna be rotten today (winds of 40pmh+) so I booked the day off. I s'pose I should be feelin a bit ashamed...

I'm sitting here looking at it now, and I've pretty much decided to get the bus! The wind is worse than last week, when I was blown all over the shop riding from Harrow in NW London, to Heathrow in SW. Good excuse to be late for work, sadly one can't run a prison by working from home!

Well its bad here and I did go on the bike.

For the first time on a bike I had to ride through a flood, maybe 4 or 5 inches.

I let all the cars go (probably about 40 yard stretch) and then got the revs up to about 9K and went slowly through.

Bus coming the other way sent a wave over to me and I got full on splashed with the water.

I do have a car though, don't get me wrong I will stop when its below zero and there's ice or snow on the ground. (looking at the 5 day, early next week).

Didn't look to bad this morning, so I rode in. Now it's blowing so hard some fairly big trees in the car park are being bent over Going to be an interesting ride home if it keeps up

FreshAl - thats what I thought earlier. Got ready all my kit on, bike out garage.

Thought its not too bad. Within about 2 miles Id nearly been blown over when stopped at some lights, and I had to put my hand on a car in the next lane to stop me being blown into the side!

Turned back. Was thinking I'm such a chicken but looking at it now I'm glad.

Though it does mean I've gotta get the train back

I didn't work today as a NSR125 and Mito 125 took my wind free parking zone (under a stairway fair play to em, as they got there first and those bike can only weigh around 120kg.

I simply rode home and phoned up saying that it aint worth the risk and they were fine with it!!

Heh - the Mito goes to it's new owner on Saturday, so figured leave it at home n' get the bus - last thing I want 2 days before it departs me for good is to get blown over on it... rather not risk it and look forward to the CB500 that awaits me...

Had to basically ride along the hard shoulder of the A696 past Newcastle airport this morning - the wind nearly had me in the barrier a few times

Oh and then i had to ride a push bike for 3 hours when i got to work

I looked out the window at the wind this morning too,considered my trusty steed wrapped up in her nice warm cover in the shed and then opted for the shogun and still got blown about in the country lanes

Update,

I'm at work and going to phone wife to pick me up.

Its too dangerous here, like when you go out side and lean forward in to the wind, it rights you up.

Tis a bit blustery, I just rode across Bristol with no problems. Down the motorway too.

I'm more worried about the bike blowing over. So I've propped it next to a lamppost.
