The eggs you eat are mostly unfertilized battery eggs.

Occasionally you might find a small black speck in a free range egg. This is a fertilized egg.

Didn't you do the birds and the bees at school? Wink

It often crosses my mind when I'm eating/cooking eggs, and something I try not to think about to be honest.

We find it bizzare that people in other cultures eat bugs/worms/dogs etc. We even frown on them.
But, is it any more peverse than eating the unfertalized remains of a baby chicken?

Is an ejected egg not effectively.....dare I say it....... a chickens 'period'?

Does the egg come out of the fanny or the actual arse of the chicken?

These are things I would otherwise never ask were it not for an internet forum.

Its just an unfertilised egg.

You could of course eat a fertilised egg if you want. In the Phillipines they call them Balut

It's a cloaca, and serves both purposes.

They fuck each other and then an ostrich will come along and drop a chicken out of its mouth.

If you want to use an extremely oversimplified comparison between the completely different reproductive systems of birds and mammals, then yes, in some sort of twisted way, an egg that we eat is a chicken's 'period'

However, to think of it in that way is a bit wrong, since birds don't have periods. The Menstrual cycle in humans is still a little bit of a mystery, and there's not (as far as I know) any single piece of conclusive evidence as to it's purpose. That being said, there is a lot of evidence supported by scientists suggesting that menstruation is designed to ensure the womb and reproductive areas are kept a clean and environmentally effective place for a baby to develop. The conditions in the womb among other things are what determines when a female is right for reproduction.

Chickens, on the other hand, through many generations of breeding, produce eggs pretty much constantly, with the chance that one of them will have become fertilised at some point.

So yes, there are parallels between menstruation and eggs but it's not a practical way of comparing them.

I always thought chickens just layed eggs on their own but someone told me a cockrel has to screw them to make eggs. Which is it?

Isn't there also something about them hatching male or female depending on when temperature they are incubated?

Our chickens have no action an lay many eggs until they get to roughly 2yro then they egg laying goes downhill so they go off to the scrap heap.... or the local kebab house

next question - does it hurt the chickens to lay eggs?

answer: from my inconcluive and limited research (ie walking past the young hens accomodation) he amount of noise and squealing I'd say that yes it hurts alot... as they age they just get bucket crotches....

am I right in thinking birds don't poo/pee they just.. do it both in one?

The point of the cycle is so that the body will keep producing eggs, if the lining of the womb didnt break down every month there would be no signals sent to the brain (ie hormones) to start the cycle again. All that would happen is that the lining of the womb would stay there all the time and no more eggs would be produced. Its all to do with hormone balance.

Its not really so that it keeps it clean as thats the job of the fluid that the vagina produces all the time (some people call it the snail trail!). The fluid is acidic so it kills any bacteria that enters the area. If menstruation was to keep the womb clean then what would happen after the menopause.

Also when a woman become pregnant the baby developes in its amnioctic (sp?) fluid, a nearly fully sealed bag for want of a better description, with the only connection to the mother through the umbilical cord.

Chickens (hens) do lay eggs in cycles.. ie they will produce for a while then stop for a bit.

I've watched chickens lay eggs many a time and I'd have to agree it can not be a pleasent experience. They normally look pretty relieved when it pops out. Laughing Imagine something bigger than your head passing through your AH. Shocked
