I'm not trying to be pedantic in any way but it does wind me up when authors and corrispondents use " TXT " speach such as; cuz, ppl, u,2,midz,foned,wanna,pls,m8 and the like when posting ordinary language for ease and quickness but can type out in full ; fuck, fucking, pricks, cunts, bastards, wankers, tits and other such profanity. Now I'm not saying that I don't use language like this but once upon a time the profanity was shortened and the correct language was left alone.

It's just natural progression of the english language. It has always been changing for many centuries, yet for some reason in this era old people stuck in their own ways wont accept the change! There has never been a problem in the past, if it is easier to write and quicker to say i dont see where the problem lies! Stop living in the past!

As above thats drivel.

A) Its not progression its just being Lazy.

B) It hasn't been a problem in the past as the youth of today have not been so lazy.

C) It may be easier and quicker to write, but its much haeder to read.

D) I don't live in the past, I have a mobile phone and use Text Talk for when I am texting someone. For everything else I use what I was taught at school.

If you stick to English and not gibberish, then people like Kawashima can follow conversations a lot easier. There is no excuse for laziness.

Mate I'm not trying to be pedantic either, but do you think that:

a) You could learn to spell, and

b) You could learn to use punctuation?

People might take your arguments more seriously.

The language may have changed over centuries, but none of the "progression" involved leaving half the letters out of words or replacing them with numbers. Progression in this instance really equals laziness.

Don't talk daft.

Didn't you do Shakespeare at school? the language hasn't changed that much since then, and often it is written in a 'posh' english that most folk wouldn't have been able to understand.

I can tell what shakespeare is saying, and barring the occasional thee, thy etc, I can understand every word. The changes that have happened have taken hundreds and hundreds of years, whereas text language sprung up around 1999-2000 when SMS first became popular.

Soon, you won't be restricted to 160 characters by the technology and you will be able to type the whole thing out on a qwerty keyboard, and so it will fizzle out.

Additionally, the difference between now and Shakesperian times was reflected in spoken language as well as written language, and yet we don't tlk lyk ths vry dy. Unless you're a moron.

To be honest its a terrible fad that is just reducing the literacy of the country by destroying spelling and grammar.

Hopefully it will die soon.

Got to be honest, I've never once used text speak in a text or on here...

People ask me why they had to read two pages worth of text when I could have done it in one, and the answer is always the same..." Because I speak English "...If I've got something to say I'll say it but it's always spelt right aswell...

Unless you've got a Dyslexic Mother then that's a whole new argument...

Couldn't agree more.

Shakespeare's plays were all written within 20 years of the King James New Testament, which is perfectly understandable and almost identical to the English we speak today.

In respect of the profanities, Chaucer's 14th-century 'Miller's Tale' contains the word 'queynte', which has become a four-letter word.

Language is always in a state of flux: we spoke a version of Gaelic, then the Angles and Saxons arrived and as they became the power their language became dominant, then the Christians arrived and gave us Latin, then the Normans arrived and all the powerful institutions save the Church used (a version of) French, then we began to explore and colonise the world so we brought back and integrated a whole bunch of strange words, then the Americans rose to power and fucked our language up completely.

Shorthand of one form or another has been around for a while.

However something like the current text-talk fad has a lot of limitations - it's fine if you're wanting to get basic information over in a condensed form, but if you want to convey anything more complex it has serious limitations.

In a mobile phone message it doesn't matter if the recipient has to spend some time working out which words have been shortened. Also, as there's relatively little information, punctuation and capital letters or the lack of, are less of an issue.
However, when trying to get across slightly more complex situations (which, admittedly, some of the posters may have an issue with in the first place Razz) it makes it a lot worse.

I'm sure some of the English today is shortened from the traditional Shakespearean English though? They do text talk in Spanish too, so if our language is going down the pan then so is everyone else's. Also why you'd bother to actually attempt to put anything vaguely complex across in a text is beyond me anyway, surely texts were made for simple things like "Be 10 mins late", things that don't actually require a phonecall, nothing long or drawn out.

Like I said at the start, I'm not an english teacher by any stretch of the imagination hence grammar, spelling and punctuation mistakes, ( even if I did use spell check ) but what I was saying is that what people think as rude and offensive language can be spelt out in full and yet every day words have to be shortened to the point that some times you are unable to read and understand it.

Well, Shakespeare's English was just that - Shakespeare's English. It bore little resemblence to the vernacular of the Elizabethan/Jacobean period. Shakespeare's contemporary audiences would have found the language as strange and fascinating as modern audiences do (15 and 16 year-olds excepted).

However, the English language has undergone a series of simplifications since 1600 (and before, obviously) hence, for example, we no longer use 'you' and 'thou' but only use 'you' instead - why have two words when you can make do with one. Incidentally, the French use 'Tu' and 'Vous' in exactly the same way as we once used 'thou' and 'you', as a mark of informality and formality respectively, although in the younger generation this is declining and 'tu' is much more common than 'vous).

So we could be witnessing another stage of this process in 'texting' language, or we could just be witnessing a fad (kind of like a modern Esperanto).

Either way, I prefer to set my phone to guess the words I'm typing so all my text messages are written in 'proper' English.

But I am a self-confessed pedant.

ITs about laziness. You ask half the text typing retards and they say its "easier". Perhaps to type, but not to decypher the resultant mess of letters Mad I can see the benefit on a rsize restricted media such as the SMS system, but i still refuse to use it, as if I cant read it then I can hardly expect the other person to either!

On a side note, I caused an absolute outroar by asking a text typer on another forum if a cat had stood on his keyboard after he ahd written something like "yh i d y" as a sentence Laughing

I don't know why you lot are lauding shakespyre as a proponant of good spelling.

Spelling was strictly optional and down to your individual taste/current frame of mind back then. I believe there are 16 different recorded spellings of "William Shakespere" as they appear on period manuscripts.

Point taken, but I don't think anyone has actually suggested that Mr Shaxbeard was a good speller. Spelling wasn't considered important until Dr. Johnson came along.
