Forgive the length of this post...

Well my best mate broke up with his v long term gf a few weeks back, hes been feeling shit but i didnt realise quite how bad as he was good at covering things up! Last night i realised he was thinking of doing stupid things and he tried to commit sucide (im on the phone during this) Luckily he failed as hes a shit boy scout and cant tie knotts, however he was pissed alone and about to try again...

I make sure hes in contact, and tell him not to move i will be there in 10mins. I run out and jump on my bike (which is SO not road legal- bald tyres, no oil in the front forks, the front heads leaking oil everywhere). The second im out the drive the red light comes on, i ignore it and pray to myself it will be ok, ride like ive never ridden before in my life, on the redline everywhere, ran several red lights and just as i enter town this plod in a yellow jacket sees me caining it down the highstreet and steps into the road with his hand up wanting me to stop! I fly straight past him and round the roundabout! About half a mile from his house the bike starts to stutter and i have to work the clutch!

Luckily i get there in time to find a noose from the beam, him with a VERY purple bruise, not knowing what the fucks going on in the process of trying again!

So now im left with a REALLY fucked bike, a likelly letter from the police bollocking me and a mate who ive got to sort out! Tag that onto a very ill mother and general work stress.....

FUCKING HELL LIVES SHIT! Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad

I wasnt sure weather to post about this but feel just typing this will prolly help somewhat, wasnt sure wheather to put it in auntie bcf, mods plz move it if need be! Thanks

If nothing else, you are a true friend, not many people would put themselves through that sort of thing.

seriously brave stuff to run reds, on a bike thats out of oil, and then run by the police, you might be lucky he might not have your license.

You can mend a bike but a mate on the wrong side of the lawn is permanent.
I hope he realises how good a friend you are.

I hope your friend is ok, good luck sorting the bike and all the best for your mum. Karma

If you do get a letter i would explain that you were on your way to stop someone killing themselves, i'm sure they could put it down to mitigating circumstances or something.

First off, I hope your friend is feeling better now.

Secondly, you are a true friend to him, and the world could do with more people like you! As ncrn said, not a lot of people would have done what you did, running the personal risk of riding a knackered bike as well as running the police.

Hope things work out for the better for you and your friend,

All the best,

Weedy Karma

thanks so much guys, that means alot! Really Thankyou!

The bike will get fixed in the end, ill start an ebay account and stuff, its my friend im more concerned with, he had apparently been planning it for the past week, if it wasnt for his shit knott tieing skills he wouldnt be here now!

As from a couple of hours time i will be at his house permanantly, pretty much on "sucidee watch". The problem is that he obviously doesnt want anyone to know; his parents, family, friends and espiecally the GF so its only me who actually knows and im a bit worried im not gonna be able to solve this on my own but i CANNOT break my word and tell family. I was thinking maybe taking him down the samaritans?

just so confused!

Samaritans really will help, he can talk it through with someone he won't feel embarressed with.

Just keep him talking, away from alcohol/motor vehicles and if he needs to cry, let him.

That is one of the problems, he drinks lots and its when hes really drunk these "open door" feelings come on - hence why i will now be with him 24/7 to stop that!

Can the samaritans call him do you think? i might give them a bell in a minute?

Sounds like very testing times for you and your friend. You did well to put him before the many other considerations your health, license etc - truly selfless acts that I'm sure won't go unrewarded in some way

Be a good mate to him once again and press him into getting some proper psychiatric help. It doesn't mean he's nuts he's just having a hard time coping with the hand he's been dealt. Proper professional treatment can make a difference to the rest of his life.

You can not take him to the Samaritans as they only exist on the other end of the phone. 08457 90 90 90 or
https://www.samaritans.org.uk/
Try them, they may be able to help you help him

Yeah, the samaritans would be the best people. If he doesn't want to talk to them directly you could explain the situation and they can give you some pointers as to how to deal with the situation.

If he does decide to talk to them, sit with him and just be a shoulder if he needs it.

Pour/Lock away all alcohol, it really isn't the answer to his situation. If you want any help, I did a two yr psych course, so i might be some help.

The samaritans do help a lot, but they won't give you the answers, all they'll do is get you to talk and try to find your own conclusions, I think they'd be a help for your friend, being able to talk to someone you can't see and will never meet again helps a lot in many situations, this one especially.

You can call them, give them your/his number and they'll call back.
A member of my family was having some problems a while back and they were really helpful, especially as they can offer empathy and impartial advice, as well as being very understanding.

Fair play Squiffy - that was really selfless of you - as the others have said - you're a great friend! I really hope things work out well for both you and your friend. And The Samaritans are a great bunch - really helpful in a completely non-judgemental way. Thumbs Up Karma

Sounds justifiable that you should put innocent peoples lives at risk to save a selfish git...

Well, to be honest SCREW YOU! Without going into his life story, i can assure you this was no emo-style cry for help, selfish maybe but if your rock bottom things change!

I didnt put anyones life at risk other than my own, this wasnt rush hour and i would do it again in a heart beat!

Shaun, that's a bit harsh is it not? I'd like to think that if I was in difficulty that a friend would be willing to help me out like that!

To be honest, thats exactly what I thought as I read his post, all the people above giving thumbs up etc but what if Squiffy had ran over your son/daughter/mother whilst riding his illegal motorcycle dangerously? Would he still be the hero? He should have called the police, not endangered other innocent people.

Considering it took them 35mins to come 5mins across town last year when they were being burgled the gf called from the top room that was my thinking! Also they would of bunged him in a bouncy cell and i know for a fact that WOULD kill him!

Ok then, what if his illegal motorbike had seized half way there, sounds like it had a good chance of happening. At that point his mate would have been screwed anyway and Squiffy hadn't told anyone what was going on.

Yes, ok fairplay he made it, but I don't condone what he did at all. If it was that desperate he should have asked someone with a legal/running vehicle for help.

Lets get it right here, he didn't go out and ride a bike he's used to that's in tip top condition to save his mate, he rode a bike that could've spat him off at any time had he messed up.

Had he ridden his bike into the side of your car as he ran red lights because he couldn't stop in time then judging by how fast he claims to have been going he could've quite easily killed you or someone you know.

He should've called the police or someone who at least has a vehicle thats safe to use.

If I went and rode my bike illegally and killed someone, regardless of my reasons for using it nobody would think I was a hero and congratulate me would they.
