Last week I was puzzled to receive tax-disc reminder letters for both of my bikes, which the DVLA assures me were due to expire on the same day.

This immediately aroused my suspicions, because I didn't actually re-tax them on the same day. (or even the same month if memory serves - the scooter's disc was handwritten and thus is now unreadable)

I've just checked my documents, and my KLE was first registered on the 30/3/06 - exactly 11 months ago, yet the DVLA are claiming that the tax ran out yesterday!

Is this some loophole in the law that I am unaware of, or are they taking the piss out of me?

EDIT:

Their website says:

Date of Liability 01 03 2007
Date of First Registration 30 03 2006

The DVLA website confirms that they think I am liable from today, and yet simple maths also confirms that I have paid 12 months rate for 11 months!

If it was on the road on 30.03.06 it would have been taxed from the 01.03.06, hence them asking you to tax it.

So they ARE stealing my money then?

Or would the dealer only have had to pay a pro rata rate?

Im not sure how it'd work. I personally thought it went from the end of the month, ie. if your vehicle was registered in December, the tax would be valid 'till the end of December the following year.

Well, it's irrelevant now, as the DVLA website (once again) can't find my insurance policy on their steam-driven database.

Nudgers, joined-up government my left buttock!

Take it to the post office with your insurance and cough up otherwise they will be stealing even more of your money.

The date that the tax disc expires is printed in big letters across the front. It will say either 28-02-07 or 31-03-07. Which is it?

From what you have said, the tax runs out at the end of March. It was road registered on the 30 March 06 so therefore taxed on that date, meaning a whole months tax (march) had to be purchased as it was going to be on the road on the 31st.

Sucks that you have to pay a whole months tax just for one day but you can't buy a 'portion' of a month.

So technically that first tax disc paid for 29 days that the bike wasn't on the road.
