Extreme condensation!!

My car's got an extreme case of condensation build-up. All the windows in the other cars in the street are clear, but mine look iced up!

A couple of weeks ago, just after the cold snap, I even sprayed de-icer on the outside of the windows, and the ice didn't melt. Know why? Cos it was water on the inside!

So, can anyone recommend how I can stop this happening, or give an indication of why it is happening? There's still a load of pines in the back from when I dumped the Christmas tree. It wouldn't be these giving there last, would it?

That happened to my friends car once, it was a slightly older car (10yrs old) and she'd left the aircon vents open and it was getting in that way.

Cheers peeps, I'll try closing the vents. How did you know it was an old car? 20 years - that's older than most people on here.

I'll get those fecking pines vacuumed one of these days too.

When you run the heater do you have it circulating?

If you just circulate the air in the car and don't allow air from outside in, it will become condensation filled. I knocked the switch on my old Xantia and couldn't understand why it filled up with water until I noticed.

Get the fan on, sucking in air from outside.

could be numerous things, the cars i have fixed with this fault it seems to normally originate from a seal. check the seals around your doors and boot. If there ok check the car to see if any of the carpets are slightly damp as this could help in finding the source, damp front carpets could be your sunroof / washer run off pipe blocked. Damp boot could be the seal around the rear lights are leaking.
once you have found the source and fixed it, the best way to dry your car out ( i find ) is to use big bags of desicent which i have loads if you require some.

what car is it and i might be able to diagnose the prob in one.

It's a Golf MkII. Completely bog standard. It's been gradually getting worse over the last few months. I'll give all the seals a check tomorrow.

once you have found the main damp patch ( hehe ) let me know i will hopefully be able to diagnose better.

also check under your spare wheel as that is normally a common one for holding water.

Of the three mates cars I've seen with a condensation problem, two of them had a leaky heater matrix which was slowly but steadily dripping coolant into the drivers side footwell.

Nope. A citroen AX and a Hyundai Accent. The Hyundai is forgiven because it has done over 180,000 miles and only cost £450 three years ago.

The Citroen was a pain in the arse. You had to dismantle the entire diash to change the matrix.

I had a little look around the car and the passenger footwell is wet under the mat after the rain today. It seems that the trim had been displaced under the glove box, and under the bonnet too. Perhaps the water was being routed into the footwell? I've tried fixing these the best I can and if it persists I'll follow the heater matrix thing - hope it's in the Haynes. Alex, would you have suggested the heater matrix for passenger footwell?

Adjusted the clutch while I was at it too.

BTW I paid £400 for the Golf 18 months ago, 69,000 miles and FSH and old bills MOT's etc. It's in good nick inside and out too.

as for the heater matrix, i would only go for that if your coolant is getting low and if the car is runnung hotter than normal.

i reckon it is your water run off pipe, have this fault alot on cavaliers.

have a look at the back of the engine bay ( when ur looking at the car ) at the bulk head / firewall. you should have some sort of elephants trunk ( a rubber long boot ) that drains the water off onto the floor when it rains etc. i reckon it will be clogged up full of shit hence the water having to somewhere, e.g in your footwell, so if you can, get ur fingers in there and clean out all the pap ( you will be suprised how much horrible stuff is in there - leaves, mud, bugs etc ) i reckon it will do the trick.
