Hi all

Im planning to ride from Cambridge to Maidstone and back again in a few weeks time, Ive only got my CBT so cant go on motorway.

I figure it will be about 200 miles each way. Firstly do you think my bike will be up to the challenge? I hear people complaning about chains and sprockets messing up after 200miles.

Secondly, any advice for such a long journey?

i own two 2 strokers.....

... my life is hell Neutral

(If you have not long been a CBT holder, good luck, this Trips going to teach you alot! Plan well though, your in for some aches and pains at the end of the ride!)

Plan your route Wink

Try and stay off of fast roads like, motorways, dual carriage ways etc.

Take a break if you feel tired or bored maybe even some music to listen to.

Check the usuals before you set off chain, tyre, bulbs etc.

Make sure you have some basic tools but being an 06 hopefully its all good but you never know.

Hopefully won't happen on your trip but make sure you got cash and plastic Wink

Thats just the basic stuff for you people on here most probably got some more to add.

The bike is more than up to the job..but do check the chain and sprockets for correct adjustment and lube..and any tight spots. ie they are up to the job. Most crappy chains are the ones fitted to chinese bikes or ones that are past there best anyhow. As ever before doing a decent distance give the bike a good going over before you set off ie..oil level all lights work . tire pressures etc....I usually carry a spare split link and bulbs along with the tools to adjust the chain as well just in case Wink

Cheers guys, about the music, do you listen to your music as you ride then? Through headphones or a selotaped radio on the back seat, haha?

I sometimes am tempted to pick up my ipod when going out for a ride..

but then i always back out... Best keep all my senses about me whilst on a bike I warn myself.

but i suppose i do alot of city riding with alot of traffic and its the smarter/safer option for myself, so then again it might just depend on the roads you ride on..

Id be intrested to hear other peoples opnion this though

yeah I'm the same, getting to work though the city I wouldnt, but would be tempted on a longer journey and keep the music level low enough to hear whats going on.

200 miles on a CG should be fine, they are bullet proof little bikes, top speed will be a chore at 65mph if light and skinny, so an mp3 player would be a must.

There was a group of 30 monkeybike owners that went from Lands End to John O Groats back in 2006 (on youtube), I'm sure that if a little kiddies bike can go the distance, then yours will Thumbs Up

yeh your CG will do it no problems, mine used to go forever, was a grand little bike.

Never have ridden with music, if im bored enough to want music on a long trip chances are im already signing to myself...... which can get slightly annoying when u can only think of one song

Weird, I'm intending to do almost the same journey soon, but I'll be going to Allhallows-on-sea, so going north from Chatham instead of south. It's about 200 miles round trip, though, not each way.

I did about 200 miles on the CG, round trip, mainly through twisty back roads although a few As were unavoidable.
Was quite fun, although it got a bit scary on dual carriageways.
I didn't stop at all, but didn't get any aches or anything. The seat does flatten out after a while though, which is a bit of a pain in the arse Smile.

I'd say go for it, it'll definitely do you a lot of good (although I wouldn't bother until the gales die down a bit, as you'll never get anywhere).
Incidentally I found the rubber on the footpegs started to melt after prolonged NSL roads...this only really happened in the middle of July, though. Razz

Uh, I'm not sure, to be honest. I would guess about 4 and a bit hours, although it was less of a planned thing and more of a get-out-and-ride--and a lot of it was basically concrete farm roads with sharp bends and ditches either side. Smile
I know that the sun was up by the time I got back. Great fun.
Depends on the weather and your route, I'd say. I would leave about 4 and ah alf hours to be safe, although it should be more like 3 and a half if it's straight NSL roads. 5 hours should cover you for most eventualities, I should think (unless it's going to be excessively windy and/or snowy, etc).
Luckily for you I think the gales are dying down come Thursday!

Good luck Thumbs Up

if your gear isn't already waterproof, make sure you pack some water proofs so that if it rains you can stop yourself freezing.

Also good gloves are a must, if it gets cold/rains and your hands go cold this can effect your concentration, I know it has for me before.

And I reckon its worth packing some food/drink so you can stop at some point and take a break to re charge yourself a little, if not buy something at a service station and just take a quick break.

Take two sets of gloves because if one gets wet and horrible it just makes your hands worse!

Take plenty of breaks so strain on bike is less! Also feel the benefit at the end of the trip!

I listen to music on my bike all the time!

City roads or dual carriageways!

If your alert and use your mirrors you can see whats comin up

The end of the A10 is very annoying on a Friday night, very slow going, with a million traffic lights and loads of idiots in mercs and bmws trying to race you, so be careful when filtering and pulling away.

I rode to Hunstanton on my SR125 on Saturday which worked out at just over 85 miles, and took just over 2 hours. That said, I didn't have to go through London. Also, the headwind on the way back took 10mph off my top speed, so took nearly 3 hours back!

On my 125, i was tempted to have a wank on really long journeys by rubbing my elbow on my boner cos if you're THAT bored, then it's the only way to keep your wits about you.

My philosophy was "sod it, i'll ride whatever happens", so when i did the mayday run, i weren't too sure what to expect. In the end, it was a 250 mile round trip on an XR125.

If it rains, just get wet. No point stopping because you're already wet, and being on a 125, you'll remain wet until you reach your destination because you're not going to get there any quicker if you're stranded on a dual carraigeway with no services or any place with a hand drier and coffee.

If your bladder is bursting, then by all means piss. There's nothing worse than having to ride for an additional 20 minutes with a faulty bladder.

I would say, in your bag, carry a few mars bars (for glucose), a can of coke (substitute for coffee) a banana for food.

Plan your route and take the twistiest and quietest roads possible, because it's more fun than the motorways and you probably won't be going any slower.

Lastly, enjoy it, don't let anything bog you down because it'll be a good time on a 125 that you'll probably remember even when you've progressed onto a 400.
Thumbs Up

you need to change your number plate slogan, if you are sometimes wanking while riding
