Disposing of Caustic Soda?

Well after searching about on the forums, and on google, the best I've found is pour it down the toilet it might be ok.

So does anyone know how I'm supposed to go about disposing of caustic soda? Pouring it down the drain had occurred to me, but my dad isn't so sure thats legal.

So any ideas how I'm supposed to get rid of it?

I knew a woman who's son drank it(don't ask) he ended up in intensive care for a month with severe holes in his throat and was in general hospital for about 3-4 months, not good for ya.

Where is the best place to get caustic soda in quantity for this job?

I used it to clean my toilet out when I moved here, the caustic soda's not the problem it's what else is in there after using it to clean stuff.

Funnel it into a gallon can and take it down the tip, they should as already mentioned have some kind of disposal container. If your in doubt get the yellow pages out and ring them first.

Ah, the old favourite.

Pour it down the plug hole of whatever the offending item is, if there is one. Follow shortly by boiling water, from a suitable distance obviously. Watch the geyser erupt.

It's pretty good for a giggle (a good demonstration of the effect of temperature on reaction rate ), though if you hurt yourself, it's not my fault.

As has been said. Probably the most common use for caustic soda is for unblocking drains so down the drain would seem logical.

A note of caution, I presume this is already mixed with water and not crystals. If it is crystals, dissolve them in water first. IMPORTANTLY add the crystals to the water, NOT the other way round if you value your skin and eyesight.

Chase it down with a couple of buckets of water to dilute it in case any wee beasties come into contact with it inadvertantly.

Mind you, I presume you've been de-coking your exhaust with a strong solution. So tip it down the drain then tip a couple of buckets of water down after it. This will actually help clear the drain of fat deposits (drains are full of fat deposits from everyones cooking and such, caustic and fat make soap when mixed together) so everyone's a winner.

best thing to clean the toilet is caustic soda! thats why they sell it in hardware stores like wilkinson's in the toilet cleaning section!

so kill 2 birds wit 1 stone. decoke ya exhaust and get a shiny bog!

Hey,

When i was 16 i had an RXS100. I used the caustic soda to clean the exhaust, and it did a god job.

Not thinking i tipped it all over the front lawn and killed off alot of the grass Needless to say dad wasn't to impressed.


If i ever had to dispose of it again i would put it down the toilet.
