In bed after getting pissed on Saturday i had a thought about 2-strokes.
Now the expansion chamber is needed (i assume) because the gases are still expanding after exiting the engine. expansion chambers are much larger than the exhaust so i guess those gases expand a lot more, maybe about 8x more after leaving the engine.
why not have the exhaust port from the cylinder go directly into a second dummy cylinder, where the gases finish expanding before going into the exhaust?
this would aid power slightly and also efficiency.

i haven't thought this through thoroughly and haven't had the time to doodle some pics but has anyone got any thoughts on this?

the expansion chamber is just to give the gases room to expand and reach a lower pressure, therefore being a vacuum compared to the high pressure gases coming out of the cylinder, and sucking them out. The shape is designed to reflect the pressure wave just right to suck out the exhaust and a bit of mixture, and then for the wave to rebound and push the micture back in but not the exhaust.

Hi

If you want to really confuse yourself then read a book on designing 2 stroke exhausts. Not for the faint hearted. Makes about as much of a mess of your brain as whipping the top off your head and sticking a food mixer in there.

All the best

Yep, sometimes you realise you have read a couple of pages and haven't got a clue what it was on about.

All the best
