i've noticed that after starting my bike that when i put it into 1st gear it gives the bike a kick.
sometimes when this happens the engine cuts out and can be a right pain in the arse to get it into 1st n then off.
ive noticed that it helps if i give it some revs while i put it into gear?

i dont know much about bikes but im pretty sure this aint right.

what do you guys think?

Warped clutch plates, or adjustment.

Is it the first time you put it into gear though in the morning, or every time you put it into first?

Not a great deal if you do it yourself and its really easy.

Clutches are about the only thing that is supposed to be a lot easier to work on on a motorcycle rather than a car, and they are dead easy.

If you need to replace the clutch plates, you will need to drain the oil and remove the clutch cover so new oil and a clutch cover gasket will be needed. First of all however I'd adjust the clutch cable so the clutch definately disengages fully when you pull the lever. You need to leave a bit of freeplay but a couple of mm at the end of the clutch lever should be fine.

I have a feeling your bike could do with an oil change and the clutch cable adjusting (as said above).

I get a "little" kick forward selecting first when the bikes first started, im sure the VFR did too if i remember right.

It's fairly normal to get a bit of a "kick" when you first put the bike into gear, but not every time.

Check your service manual on how to check the oil (if you have a sight glass you'll probably have to warm the engine up first). Check it and top up/change if necessary, and as has been said, check the clutch cable for adjustment.

When was the last time your bike had an oil change?

I would suggest that your first task would be to change the oil and filter. I would also check the plugs, air filter, etc, if you've only had the bike for a month. You just never know how well the previous owner looked after the bike - is there a service history for it?

Have a look at your manual for adjusting the clutch - there will be an adjuster where the cable goes into the lever on the bar.

You can't check directly, but you can adjust all of the freeplay out of the cable by twiddling with the adjusters at either end. Once this is done, put 2mm of freeplay (at the end of the clutch lever) back in the cable, and if you still have the problem you'll need to open 'er up.

Old dirty oil can cause this, or oil that is too heavy.
