I had a Shoei and didn't like it - it didn't fit me right (XS).

Got an Arai - which I love, but its too big . . . . . (XS) !

I have to push the helmet back down onto my head at faster speeds and it shunts when I do a shoulder check! Not right.

I like the look of the Suomy, what are they like?

I'm sure trying them all on is the best idea, just not sure when I'll get a chance to do that!

Does anyone know of a make that comes up small?

I don't think getting a 51-52 cm helmet is the answer - I'm sure I'll never get itover my head.

Maybe you wouldn't waste so much money on lids that didn't fit properly if you went and tried them on. Confused

What arai is it?
If its a Condor you are stuffed as it does not have a removable lining.
If its anything else you can get XXS set of cheek pads/crown for it to help with the fitting.
If you want/need an entirely new helmet, the Arai Astro light comes in XXS and XXXS sizes.(Astro light is same as the Astro R, just in teeny weeny sizes)

As for Suomy, they are not a bad lid, however for the money you are spending (£300-400) you would be much better served by an ARAI.

UK Suomy lids are not as strong as their US counterparts- they are built differently to the US spec ones as they only have to pass EC-22-05 testing, whilst they need to pass the much stricter SNELL tests in the states.

(EC-22-05 tests only specific points on the helmet, so manufacturers purposefully strengthen these areas to allow them to pass. SNELL tests any point on the helmet, chosen by the tester at random, thus manufacturers cannot get away with only strengthening certain areas.)

So change the Arai's lining if you can, otherwise try an Astro Light.
Lining will cost about £35 for cheek pads and £30 for the crown.
If you go to a "5 Star" dealer, they should have those pads in stock to let you try altering the fitments.

Thumbs Up

Afraid trying on lots of brands is the only answer really - if you can, try and get to a show with lots of stalls you should be able to try on most models on offer in a day.

If you take out the cheekpad and remove the lining from it, you should be able to cut some foam to size and stick it in. Much cheapness. Thumbs Up

Just watch out for stall like J&S selling fire damaged goods.
If a helmet has been near a fire, the foam inside is useless as its either melted away from the inside of the shell or gone rock hard.

Other stall are very reputable though.

Thanks for everyones info.

I had a biker look at the fit and they confirmed . . its too big Sad

So, I went to a shop (girlsbike2) to get fitted correctly. They said I could get an XXS Arai or a different brand.

They tried the Chaser on me and said it moves so much, it couls break my nose or spine. Fatter cheek pads might be OK, but a closer shell with tight fitting cheek pads is better. www.racevisors.co.uk have been so kind as to cancel my order for fatter cheek pads.

So, I'm selling my almost new Chaser and am getting . . . . .

https://www.webbikeworld.com/r2/motorcycle-helmet/urban-helmets/n20-astro.htm

WOW this fits well, does not budge . . . . . !
Made my AGV I belive and brand new to market. Only 100, so after selling my Arai - I won't be out of pocket by much.

Oh and just call me pin head. Smile

Suomy lids come up small compared to other brands, the only lid that is comfortable for me is a size S Suomy.

Good job i like their designs Mr. Green Thumbs Up

The trouble with having a small head is that some helmet manufacturers only make one or two different sizes of shell - they then use padding to reduce them down to fit smaller heads. The more padding there is, the more likely it is to compress over time which leads to a loose fit.

With your Arai, the proper way for the shop to fit it is to first of all find out what size you need based on the crown padding. They do that by taking out the cheek pads and letting you try it on. It should fit well around the top (crown) of your head. Once you've got a shell that fits (Arai make lots of different sized shells), the cheek pads can be changed to suit. Most dealers don't do this as it's time consuming, but it's how it should be done.

Glad to hear you seem to have found one that fits though Smile
