basically I need an old knackered bike, of 125cc's or below for use over the winter period!

I plan to start trying to get my RS back to how it was before I got it (apart from the mileage) which I don't to do just to bin it on the ice!

It doesn't have to be anything special (it could even be a scooter) just crap and cheap so I can laugh at it when the ice decides to appear.

I know somebody selling a very tatty KMX125 for £150. The engine is very sound but it is very tatty and would need some time spent on it to get it through an MOT.

Its because Rs125 riders have more sense :p

I have paid £290 to get my ts50 on the road and insured. One fairing panel on a rs125 costs £320 alone from aprilia!

Even if you don't drop your bike, you end up with rust everywhere from the grit that they use in winter.

In the long run its worth it, it takes a load of my mind knowing that if i drop my ts50 on ice i wont give a shit so long as i don't get ran over in the process. :p

How much time and money do you think? at an estimate obviously!

And as mike said a fairing panel for the RS is very pricey, mine are scratched and one cracked as it is I really don't need to have to hold it onto the bike whilst I ride! Like I said I want to get my RS fixed which means I don't want to either break what I just fixed or make more repairs necessary!

The whole thing needs to be given a damn good sanding and greasing, there are several bolts, levers, cables and things missing in places, the exhaust leaks and would need welding up, the seat is torn, the plastics are a bit manky, the chain and tyres look like they survived world war two, etc etc.

I would have had it but for the fact that I have no time to work on it, at a guess I would say it needs 3 weekends work and around a hundred quid spent to clean it up. Possible budget £300 overall.

Pansy RS riders. Just don't bin it! Then again, that is the legacy of the RS. I Can't beleive you plan to have a 125 long enough to warrant keeping it "Mint".
Oh dear Razz

How bad an idea is it to just take off all your fairings until winter passes?
Would a load of crap get on the engine and screw it?

You could take the fairing off for the winter however that would mean getting some indicators and lights and mirrors that aren't fairing mounted which may cost you a bit.

Also even if you bin the bike you would still scratch the bar ends, frame, and various other bits. Having no fairing would also mean that all the salt off the road would get to the engine and other parts and turn them rusty. Plus the chain would still be getting a hammering which cost a fair bit more than on cheap bikes.

If you are doing short journeys on rs125's and bigger bikes they tend not to warm up by the time you get to your destination as they take longer to get warm in winter. Its not good constantly running a bike on cold as it chokes it up. Obviously if you commute quite a distance then this isn't an issue (I commute 1 mile to college).
