I've been thinking about buying a new bike & I quite like the Kawasaki ER-6f ABS and the Honda CB 600F hornet I was wanting some advice on what you think is the better bike of the two, any thoughts?

Hornet is better , got 2 more cylinders , hell its just a naked CBR600 sort of,

But you sure you 'need' a new bike ? , your CBF500 is more than capable of fast riding, if an old 210kilo NTV shaft drive goodness can keep up with 600 sports ... then go figure, but

alas your money your choice.

I had the ER6n ABS.

Probably the easiest bike to ride in the whole world. And one of the safest (that ABS is a lifesaver in the rain/gravel/etc)

I think it looks original and is quite low maintenance.

However, the Hornet has a little bit more oomph and if you are planning to tart it up and stick a nice can on it, the Hornet has more aftermarket options for it.

Test-ride them both! Thumbs Up

The ER-6 does look a smart bike didn't realise the hornet had two more cylinders though.

oh yeah you didn't see it at Squires,

I currently ride an NTV650 '93 reg , Honda bike , its 53 BHP (optimistic) weighs 210 kilos , handles like a bus , has poor brakes and catches fire every now and again. It does not have a chain it uses shaft drive which is heavy and robs 10% of the power.

Your CBF500 carries 58bhp , chain drive is 180kilos handles better brakes better and is generally a better bike ,

Thus your bike is quite capable of mixing it with 600 super sports if my slower heavier fatter badly damaged bike can mix it with the bigger boys your current bike defo can, but as said I don't know your motives for a new bike,

my motives are sports touring and faster weekend ride outs.

I'm not sure of your motives ,

My motives are a newer bike that's all! like the Hondas but I've also aquired a taste for the Kawasaki's smart bikes look well built as well as the Honda's. Just wanted some different views on which would be the better bike with having limited knowledge on different makes of bikes.
No I didn't see your bike at squires Itchy just heard about it from reading different posts from people off the forum. Thanx for the advice non the less and it would be interesting to read other peopes views on what they think. Smile

I'm also considering these bikes for when I've taken my DAS. My intention is to test ride these and also the middleweight Suzukis and Yamahas, and see which I prefer. However I do like the look of the ER6-F, and the 0% finance is a big factor too.

Yeah the 0% finance sounds good the ER-6f'S look a smart looking bike but been looking at the spec on the hornet & it has a 16 valve DOHC inline-4 engine as compared to the ER-6 which has DOHC 8 valves.

Is that not because it's a twin? And thanks for the good luck wishes!

I useing an ER-6F for a hire bike whilst my own (Triumph Speed Four) is in repair.

I find it comfortable, easy to ride, but boring.
It hasnt got brilliant acceleration, but the power is smooth and predictable.

Im not used to having a bolt upright position, so I find slow speed a little unsettling.

I would say a Hornet.
Move value for money and alot of aftermarket options.
Also solidly reliable. Thumbs Up

What are the triumph's like to ride reppyboyo are they very reliable? I know a biker who's got a kawasaki and he says that the bill quality on the kawasaki's are better than the Honda's is that true?

Yeah your right gypsyjackson the ER-6 does have a 4-stroke paralled twin engine. I've been reading about the maximum power output on both of the bikes and it says that the ER-6 has a maximum output of 53kw (72.1 PS) / 8,500rpm. Then it says that the Honda Hornet maximum output 95bhp @ 12,000rpm.
What does PS mean as compared to bhp which is the better of the two?

I love my Speedy, very stable and an amazing ride.
Bit uncomfortable on the knees after a while though.

I cant comment on reliability has I havent had mine long, but it hasnt skipped a beat.
Yet, as far as I know Triumphs are as reliable as Jap bikes.

I dont know about the build quality.

Apparently the ER-6 is 71HP.
The hornet is better.

Whats your budget by the way?

Triumphs are really smart bikes but are they more expensive than 600cc Honda's or Kawasakis when bought new.
My budget at the moment is about £7,000 which is the most I will spend on a bike at this moment in time.

yeah was thinking that but you have to be careful with who's had the bike before you as well, they could have hammered it.

Yea that is the risk you take, but on the flip side you could end up with a gem.

Just shop around really, you should find a good deal on either bike.
I would think the insurance would be pretty good on them also.

Remember that the Hornet is significantly more expensive to insure than the ER6.

Well there's only one out of thiose 2 I would pick Smile

I like the look of the Kawa, but I think it's a bit more suited to the female rider (exlcluding the insane ones such as Fran), Its really small, and petite. I doubt it's as well built as the honda either.

But obviously I am biased. I loved my 1999 model, so much that in the end when I got a bit of cash recently, I ultimately plumped for the new model.

Its a great bike. Easy to ride. Comfy riding position, and more pokey than anything in it's class.

Nurseynoo... the bike you have is a damn fine ,first big bike, and as you have only recently got your restricted licence, it seems a bit of an odd move......cos, if you have the er6 or the hornet........you are still going to have to have it restricted.....so it why dont you wait till your 2 year restriction period is up....then seriously look at changing your bike.
Have you tried the dealers to see what they are offering on yours?? If you havent....I reckon you'll be surprised at what they offer part ex Sad You might end up taking a substantial financial loss.....but then again, if you have a budget of £7000 that might not bother you.

That said....there is 0% on the hornet and the er6 at the moment.

I test rode the er6 the other week.....and thought it was good. As the others have said, it is extremely easy to ride....like putting on a pair of old slippers. Light and compact and nippy. However, there are a lot of very low mileage examples around at the moment, which to me says... people are getting bored with them quickly.

Cant speak for the hornet though, not ridden one. Dont know how you would get a test ride on both of the above, cos of the restricted licence...unless you were testing one allready restricted.

Now you have some experience of handling the bigger bike, you could always take you full test... you dont have to wait until your 2 years is up.
