636 advice

Well, currently looking at 636's and im just wondering if any of you 'orrible lot have any views on it? if you own one?

Power (top speed, 0-60)
handling
fuel economy
braking
'2 up handling
forgiving?

and also anythings to look out for?

spotted a 2004 reg one for 2.5k with 31 on the clock, and of course, its in BLACK!

Fantastic bike steve.. I'm not sure about 0-60 but its a fast machine..
The bike you were looking at must have been a B1-B2 bike,, The rear shock is a bit stiff,, if its still the standard shock that is on it.. It would be a good idea to get it changed if your doing mostly road riding,, however its ballistic on track , and kwak fans swear by them..

The fuel is just standard to up to date fuel injection models.. Also depends on how you ride it..

The brakes are sharp when new, but any bike will benefit from braided hoses and are a good idea to fit for track days..

Two up handling I aint got a clue about because that just spoils a good ride.. From what I hear its not a comfy experience for the pillion..

Its as forgiving as any other bike..

Rear shock is very hard, the 636 loves to do mini tank slaps on anything that isn't flat, it's very uncomfatable as the seating area seems like it's made for track use (ass right back), has a noisy engine, insurance seems to be more then the other popular 600s.

Good things are, it has an extra 36cc which makes quite a bit of difference one being it's faster then the R6, CBR, GSX-R etc. brakes are sharp & handles very well.
I'd say for the forgiving part just watch out for the tank slappers or get a damper.

31,000miles is why it's cheap, It wouldn't bother me all that much as the engines are bullet proof if looked after. Make sure the valve clearances are sorted as they're due now. Only concern with bikes with that kind of mileage is other bits like suspension, bearings, brakes/discs etc they maybe on their way out so could cost a bit to replace.

The bike itself is very focused, it howls like a monster when opened up, pops like a beast on the down change really brings out the worst in you I wouldn't say it's forgiving, it handles well but it's a very hard ride so you'll need to tell it where to go. It's a big bike, but amazingly only weighs about 162kg, so it feels heavier than it is.

Wife gets around 100-110 miles before the fuel light (4l reserve so should last awhile)

Brakes are awesome imo, they feel spongy when squeezing at standstill but once you're on the road they're super effective (Except the rear brake which sucks) Fitted braided hoses on the weekend which helped too, although I haven't rode it with the new brake lines yet.

Decent bike, a bit more compact than a thundercat i would say, i'm 6'4" and get sore wrists after a few hours on the 636.


Nice quick bikes, handle well when set up properly, i normally get just under a 100 miles on a tenner before i hit the reserve but i do tend to rev the balls off it.

Mine tends to hop about on uneven surfaces with the power down but i dont think thats abnormal.

If I had seen a B1 anywhere near that price a few weeks ago thats what I would be riding now. Just seems to cheap to be true. J2's and A1P(636) models still fetch £3k all day.

I have a B1h and can conur with whats been said already.

VERY focused riding position, my balls have been known to try and enter my stomach on a bad day, there is nothing forgiving about the ergos on this thing, its made for going round tracks very fast indeed!

Sounds mental even before you put an aftermarket can on it, the induction roar is fantastic.

The engine is much more useful than the other 600's i have ridden (which includes a 2006 R6 / GSXR / CBR and a 2004 Daytona 650) and seems powerful for a 600.

0-60 who knows, depends on rider, between 3 and 3.5.

Top Speed, not sure. I have seen 178 indicated on the speedometer, so -10% thats about 160 and there was more to come.

Handling is absolutely fantastic, as mentioned it does feel harsh, but once you get used to it you realise that its not going to let go on you.

Steering damper is desirable, although i`ve never had the money to fit one, and i havent fallen off yet so thats ok. It does sometimes shake its head, but so does an angry dog, and we all like dogs


2 up is fine, although the person on the back is going to be so sore!

Forgiving? no not really, it has a one track mind and you are constantly reminded of what its for by the pain in your groin and the ache in your wrists, the suspension is harsh the engine is noisy and the ergos are extreme.

Having said that, it makes you feel absolutely wired every time you start it up, and i just know that you will love this bike. 03-04 ninjas are the best use of the 636 engine, people buy them because they know what they are going to get, a scaled down zx10.

Agree with most already said

Mine still has the standard shock, hence some roads don't suit if too bumpy, others though fast as.....

No dampner either, you will get used to it given time.


Forgiving? I think it is, when it really matters. Lost the front end twice when the front slid out on gravel etc when heavy braking, on one occasion ended up sidewas both times mansged to hang on and ride out the other end, not recommended you try it but i really should have been off

Thought as a new owner I would chip in. Ive not had a massive biking career. Ive owned an RS125, a CBR600, a Hornet 600, and a SV650s. Ive also ridden bandits, a 98 R1, a triumph sprint and a couple of others. The 636 I have now, is by far the best looking, sharpest handling, most precise peice of engineering Ive ever had the good fortune of sitting on, let alone owning.

Im in love with my 636. Get one!!

The looks of the older one put me off really. Ive never wanted a kawasaki until I saw the C1H/C6F models. The colours on the fairings, big writing etc make it look garish. Dont even get me started on some of the more hideous paint schemes kawasaki have produced.

I think the newer models have cleaner lines. What do I know though!

Really like the black frame & the underseat exhaust on the newer Ninja's, they're much more rounded then the 03s but still lovely.
If one happens to come up in a few months in black i may be tempted.

The pic with the chicken strips is from the day I test rode it. It only had 280 miles on it at that point!!

The black ones do look ice but Ive never seen one in real life. The only reason I ended up with titanium was because that was 1 of 2 that were on sale locally. The other one was green and had a steering damper but had about 3k miles on it.

God knows what the guy who bought it new was thinking, he only put 280 miles on it before he traded it in. Most of that will have been bringing it home from the dealers in liverpool!

Lovely bike, even more tempted now i seen the prices they go for.
I'm guessing it would be more or less the same as my B1 in terms of handling & performance? Although they do look alot bigger.
