PostPosted: 13:18 - 23 May 2007    Post subject: Belly Pan Crack or more? Reply with quote

Hello

Had a belly pan fitted a few weeks ago. Rode it home 1 hr fine.

Last Friday, second time out on it, got home was in rush, dumped bike, shot off in car, got back to see big crack on LHS! With splattered oil all over it.

The only thing I can recal is being walloped on my left foot by an industrial plastic bag (bout a mile from home).

Bummer, but whats the oil? I've wiped if off now to see if it returns. There is no oil on the floor, but a layer inside the belly pan.

Im suprised it cracked so easily. Here are some pics, was just about to sitcker it like the RHS as well Sad

Any advice? Hoping to ride it to Silverstone on Sunday.

Thanks would really appreciate

I'd take off the belly pan completely and give the whole area a good clean so, like you say, you can see if it's coming from your bike.

Have you checked the oil level to see if it's gone down from last time you checked?

OK, with a little improvisation (lady of few tools).

Permission to laugh if I am right. . . . Is this (short fat one) a fuel over fill outlett?

I have a bad habit of filling to high!

Worth a check!

Need to duck tape now for the inside of the belly pan. I didn't want to join the duck tape club this early on.

They look like your overflow pipes, fill up with to much fuel and thats were it comes out. Thats a nasty crack in the belly pan, if you take it to SDC in stevenage they will be able to repair it for you.

That does look like a breather/overflow pipe. Is the oil check a sight glass or dipstick check? Make sure the oil is between the high/low markers as over filling can result in engine damage.

The FAT one will be the engine breather pipe/oil over flow.

And the THIN one is more then lightly the carb over flow pipe or even a water drain pipe from the air box..

Just checked the oil - first time since I had the bike (SLAP)

Bike was freshly serviced just before I collected it and I've not been far. Lever looked full to me and I've never added any.

Nasty crack - it's almost right the way though. I was thinking plastic glue, sandpaper and white gloss Wink.

Will bere them in mind - thanks Chris.

(It's gluing in my kitchen at the mo) - Grrrr

Least I am OK for Sunday Smile

Thank you,
Jo

Oh thanks, wonder why its leaking now?

Maybe I've only been given reason to notice since the belly pan cracked. Its normal then for it to spill a bit of oil here?

I dont think its really normal for oil to leak, i think they must have over filled it on the service, check to see its not over the full line on the dipstick/window.

Then your bike is spitting out the oil that it does not want, Think along the lines of eating way to much, then being sick.

You COULD potentially do serious damage to your engine if you run it with to much oil.

My advise, jump on it and take it down there and demand that they remove the excess for you its their fault it was over filled.

When they do a service it includes full oil change, was probably from then. What dealership did this?

If you want, you ring them and book them to do it and ill drive it down there if you want it done before sunday and not quite up to it? Can probably do it saturday morning, would have to be early though as got appointment in luton for 12, or if their open late can do it for like 3ish. Would say i'd give you my keys as security but my bike is worth f'all Laughing

Webbs Yamaha.

Is this really critical?

Your so kind and generous. That's a massive favor. Thank you so much. I can't let you go all that way. Esp as I already owe you a favor (ref key).
Leave me your key! LOL, I trust you. I'm not good with keys remember, oh and for the record, my car key is bent too - still works tho. Laughing

Can I blow some out - like you can fuel in a car? Or is it a bit harder cos oil is heavy'er?

I'll do another oil check tommorow.

Smile

Well offers there, if i can do it im more than happy to.

How comes you went all the way towards wisbeach, its near where i dive? You could drain it and refill it yourself, however it is their mistake and if you do that they can then deny this.

It looks pretty straight forward to get to of the A1 in all honesty, if you do need it taken down give me a shout Smile

I'd maybe use the chance to do an oil/filter change by yourself - it's something that is good to know and very easy. Admittedly, after just 950 miles it's a bit premeture but I try to do mine every 2k anyway.

If the dealer is quite far away then the time/effort getting there offsets the cost of new oil/filter, plus you'll laugh when you realise how easy it is and how much dealers charge to do it.

One of the pleasures of bikes is learning how to do stuff like this yourself - I can do it and I'm a complete mechanical numpty.

Soulrider - Was buying a new car seats in Peto, decided to look at bike shops, found the bike I wanted.

Beside, I used to live near there, so know the area a little.

There are lots of dykes to dive in in that area Razz . Where do you dive?

Joe - Exactly what I'd like to do, just close cut for time on this one. Sunday looms Neutral

Ahh - Zzzz for me, will think about it in the morning.

Thanks you all so much for advice.
Slowly I am learning.

When you are checking the oil level the bike is on level ground and stood upright, not on the side stand ?
Simple mistake to make.

Also the large pipe could be from the air box. My bike has a habit of breathing oil into there, thanks to the crankcase breather venting up to the air box. Then when bike is on side stand it will drip oil out of the pipe. This seems to be worse when bike is only used on short runs and does not get chance to really shift all the condensation out of the crankcase.
Follow the pipe up and see where it ends. If its at the air box, have a look inside.

Some bikes are meant to lightly oil the air filter, with oil vapor from the engine.

I dive in Gildenburgh, not a bad lake, think they do paint balling there as well. I though you actually got your hornet from a honda dealer. So tell me mroe about these diving dykes? Laughing
