Hello all. Just after a bit of advice really. Just wondering when you are supposed to change the brakes. The front brakes is a disc brake and the rear is a drum. The bike has done 3,900 miles and will have a service by 4,000, is this something they will check out for me? Also, seens as though I have lost my owners manual, how do you know when to and how to adjust the rear brake? Thanks in advance.

Hi

No hard and fast rule. Very much down to riding style.

They will / should check them at the service. Had pads last 20K before and also had some last about 3k.

All the best

Keith

Thanks for the reply, is there no rule of thumb or tell tale signs that they need changing? They have started to make a grinding noise, as though something is rubbing and it shouldn't be, and lately, it is turning into a high pitched squeak, only slightly though.

Hi

A grinding noise is normally the sign that they have gone beyond worn out and are now down to the metal and wrecking the disk. Check them yourself to ensure there is friction material on the pads still, and if no do not ride it (you will have poor brakes at best, until the point the backing gets hot and welds itself to the disk).

Normally pads have a groove down the middle and when it gets worn down to that level the pads need to be replaced.

All the best

Keith

Just have a good look, and the disc itself has started to get rust on it, but not random spots, in a circular motion. I'm gonna take it to the garage tomorrow morning to be serviced. Had a look at the drum brake. When the peddle isn't been pressed, the marker shows that it is a 'new' drum, and when I press it hard, the marker appears to be used about 25%. Do i need to adjust this?

Hi

Sounds like the rear shoes are fine. Maybe adjust it a bit to your personal taste, but doesn't sound like it needs doing for other reasons.

With the front disk brake you need to check the pads. Riding with them down to the metal is potentially very dangerous.

All the best

Keith

My YBR was due new front pads after just 2,500 miles (I bought the bike at 1,800 and they were already pretty shot). I dunno what the person before me had been doing as the replacement pads were hardly scrubbed in when I sold the bike 2,000 miles later...

One useful indicator for your front pads is the brake fluid level. As long as it has not been topped up you should be able to gauge brake wear by how much the fluid drops. Obviously as the pads wear away fluid is required to fill the excess space behind the pads.

my YBR has done 2600miles and brakes seem fine although my driving style is fairly aggressive.

The front brake on my YBR needs servicing too and I have done 5k miles. The fluid is generally at the lower mark and has been for a while. But sometimes it goes up again which is confusing. My brake grinds too or it sounds like the is something touching the disc while the wheel goes around. The braking performance doesnt seem any different though.

I really need to get it looked at but I dont have the money.

I am on my 2nd pair of front pads at 13000 miles. I changed them at about 7000 miles. The rear drum is still fine Smile Not even past the half way mark yet. No drop of fluid at all but I bleeded them and replaced the fluid recently anyway.

I've found if you rely on the front brake mostly, the pads will wear really quick. You can trim fair amounts of speed off with the rear drum without locking the rear wheel with it correctly adjusted. I sorted someone elses YBR a while ago and he managed to wear down to metal within 2000 miles. Laughing
