No matter what back protection the suit already has i always ride with and independant back protector reason being if you go down the road leathers can twist on your body if the back protector is part of it it can move away from what its meant to be protecting and that could hurt . an independant back protector is not part of the suit, so in theory it should saty in place even if the leathers twist. ____________________ Current:SV650s K5 ( back on the road and going fine no bloody coppers on my behind.) |

Get a tankbag.
Never be tempted to carry keys/mobile/pens/whatever on you on a bike—if you crash, they can cause some nasty injuries.
As for back protectors, it doesn't really matter as long as they're CE approved. Get what you can afford. You can always go for an Alpinestars MotoGP jobby if you're a real tart. ____________________ the warped one: This is a follow up from the thread 'my willy hurts' |

The hump is for aerodynamic drag stuff.
I would never need one as I go too fast and the air just slips past.
There is some controversial spin on the go with regards to back protection.
I like to have something there.
CE approved.
Several layers of stuff seem to flex more, have and less chance of splitting during normal wear.
They also help keep your back warm which is good for your spine.
You could go for one of those S&M full body thingies which you wear under but they are bulky.
And @bcf you should allways have a back protector. Some sneakies on here ____________________ W-ireless A-rtificial L-ifeform L-imited to O-bservation P-eacekeeping and E-fficient R-epair |

Firstly, don't be sucked in by CE approval, for the main part it is a waste of space as SATRA (who do the CE testing) will approve anything that complies with what the manufacturers state it will do.
For example if a manufacturer states that a garment is waterproof, it will only be tested for waterproofing and if it passes will get CE approval, but they can then make additional claims on the back of that CE accrediation
In respect of back protection, if you can get a memory foam back protector built into your leathers, it will prove far more beneficial than any strap on protector.
All too often I have dealt with riders who have been badly injured because of wearing a back protector (strap on kind), simply because of the fact that they are designed for use on the track rather than on the road, and the conditions we encounter on the road are far different to those on the track.
I am dealing with a case at the moment where a rider is now a paraplegic due entirely to his back protector, but had he been wearing a memory foam one built into his leathers, the chances are he would still be walking about.
I am not saying don't get one, all I am saying is do not place all your faith in one for road riding, I have seen too many people come unstuck simply because they felt that if it was good enough to race in, it must be good for the road.
Same with one piece leathers for the road, different characteristics to a two piece, not practical and a whole load of issues regarding safety on the road.
I am not telling you this because I don't like 1 piece suits (which I don't) it is based on my ongoing research and study over the last 15 years where I have been closely studying the affects of clothing and protective equipment in crash situations in addition to visiting most of the manufacturers around the world. ____________________ It is better to arrive 30 seconds late in this world, than 30 years early in the next |

but then if its built into the leathers how do you avoid it from moving? |
It is in specially made pockets to prevent it from moving around.

Sounds very interesting, in what guise are you undertaking this study, is it part of a medical study, academic or just plain interest? Can you give me more of an insight as I'm obviously very interested in preserving my own safety. |
I spent the last 5 years of my Police service involved heavily in the study, which then continued when I retired and was asked to act as an advisor to various bodies such as the government and BSI as well as overseas bodies.

In terms of 1 piece Vs 2 piece suits I have to say the comfort and flexibility or riding in a 1 piece is loads better than a 2 piece and seems to offer more protection to the forearms and thighs than my 2 piece whilst also not bulking or separating at the waist. |
In regards of your flexibility and comfort comment, you are probably the first person I have ever heard make this comment, but in terms of protection a two piece will afford the same protection around the extremities, particularly in respect of full lenth zip togethers.
If a two piece zips all the way around it will not seperate or bulk, but it makes access to vulnerable areas such as the lower body much easier.
1 piece sits also go baggy very quickly compared to a two piece because the stress areas are designed differently to accomodate the racing crouch. A two piece will retain its shape far better, and unlike a 1 piece, you can remove the jacket when you are off the bike, whereas with a 1 piece many people tie the arms in a big lnot around their waist causing additional strain on the sleeves and joints.

Most good manufacturers will have good memory foam protection built into the suit, but although based in Germany if you want really top quality at afordable prices, then the best on the market is Harro at https://www.harro.de ____________________ It is better to arrive 30 seconds late in this world, than 30 years early in the next |
