Right took my tank, air filter off last nite and found petrol in the air box tray. Now I know for a fact that petrol shouldn't be their. So does anybody know what might of caused it and what i have to do about making sure it doesn't keep happening.

If its oil, it could be oil coming up the breather pipe which feeds into the airbox from the sump.
This is caused by one thing and one thing only:

Wheelies Very Happy

Stop wheelying is the answer to that.

If its petrol, then I'd be scared if I were you, cos if your tank has got a hole in it, you'll need to buy wa new one.
As Andrew said, it could be a loose hose, or it could indeed just be where you've taken the tank off, the hose has come loose and sprayed petrol into the airbox.

Find out if its oil or petrol. Stick yer finger in it, if it evaporates, its petrol, if not its oil. Cool

Hi

Traces of petrol there are fairly normal. Large amounts are not. Some oil will get blown out of the breather hose, the more worn the piston rings are the more oil will get blown out.

All the best

Keith

I didn't mean ACUALLY stop doing wheelies, I meant if you want to stop having to drain oil from the airbox then stop wheelying.
Personally I'd rather do a little more maintenance plus a few more wheelies! Very Happy

Right, it's definately petrol, a small puddle in the tray, I did connect the hoses properly and the bike has been sitting still for the 4 weeks. I'm gonna check holes in the petrol tank but dout that thats whats causing it. My guess is that the carbs are squirting too much petrol or something.

And Rossi I am already a member of Greybike (control-007)

Hi

What happens is that the inlets to the carbs are a tuned length, and at certain revs the airflow will go through the carbs but then back through again in the opposite direction (collecting fuel on the way). Sometimes you can see this with the engine running, with a smallfuel mist being visable before the carbs. Depending on what you do with the throttle some of this fuel can then drop out of the airflow and then sit in the airbox.

So a thin coating is not unusual. A puddle would be unusual. But I suppose that depends on the shape of the airbox, etc, and how long it would take to collect. Might be worth checking the carb breather hoses if these vent into the airbox.

All the best

Keith
