Ok im a complete novice and have heard this term so was wondering what exactly are "lifesaver checks"

Im due to take my CBT shortly Im just waiting to hear back about when we can take it (I get it free through work!!)

A "lifesaver" is essentially a check over your shoulder (not using the mirror) just before making a manouvre.

PULLING AWAY
When pulling away check over both shoulders
TURNING RIGHT OR LEFT
Before turning right or left you should check the appropriate blind spot before turning your bike
CHANGING LANE
Before changing lane or entering a hatched turning refuge or entering or leaving a motorway check the gap you are moving into is clear
ROUNDABOUTS
Check over right hand shoulder on entering roundabouts and left hand shoulder before exiting for anyone on your offside or nearside
CHANGE OF SPEED LIMITS
On entering speed limits check for anyone who might not be slowing and trying to overtake you. When leaving speed limits you should check for anyone accelerating too early (just my 2p i was told that a quick mirror check both mirrors before changing speeds is probably just as good)
OVERTAKING
Preferably, before pulling out and pulling back, however forward vision may well be more appropriate for developing situations - providing good mirror checks have been carried out.
SUMMARY
With all shoulder checks, safety must be your prime objective at all times in particular where forward vision may be more appropriate in a developing situation.

At the risk of being redundant, they are also required when turning right to avoid getting mashed by folks trying to overtake (for example).

Yes I do, although we can get a bike through our loan scheme (which includes everything except the petrol)

As soon as the CBT is done i'll be getting the CBR125 for a while then its off to do my DAS at Quickstart.

Forgive me for not clearing this up. I was talking soley about the left hand lifesaver, as I assumed people would realise that you need a right lifesaver every time you turn right. Apolgies for not making it clear. Yes, I do ride bikes, yes, I do my lifesavers.

I got on a pedal for the first time in about 14 years yesterday and i was doing lifesavers.

You need to they save your life and when your in the habit you will always do them. Have thanked this many of times when a driver has had me of the road.

to answer original question.what is a life saver?
as there are many kinds of observation
mirror, a glance, a shoulder check and a life saver.
this is only my opinion. "a life saver of any direction is a look to where the point of danger at the last point you can abort " (eg if pulling right out of a t junction I would take a clear look to my left and just before pulling out look again at a point i can still abort the manoeuver)I would consider a life saver at many points throughout a ride.

i must for get to stop doing that it hurts

mine are the other way round, ive set it up so its the same hand i use to brake on the motorbike as the mountain bike

Ok not sure if this is true or not, or wether i just heard my CBT instructor completely wrong, but he told me an easy way to remember a lifesaver was that its always thrown over the opposite shoulder to the direction you are about to turn, i.e. for a left hand turn, you would mirror, signal, then throw a lifesaver over your right shoulder. Is this correct?
