To settle an argument, what is the national speed limit!?

I said:

"The national speed limit varies depending on what type of road you are on"

But have been told that

"highest is 70 so thats classed as the NSL"

Cheers

Mark

60 or 70 miles an hour depending on the road. Single carriageway/dualcarriageway.

although last time this was here someone put forward a good arguement that in reality it is 30 because all the others require signs when you enter the zone. Something like that.

The National Speed Limit is a variable depending on two factors, the type of vehicle you are driving and the type of road which you are on. For example the National Speed Limit for a large truck on a NSL single carriageway A-road is 40mph, whereas for a bike it would be 60mph.

That is why it is referred to as the National Speed Limit - because it is a variable factor. If it stood for one certain speed and one certain speed only (such as 70mph) then they would class it as a 70mph zone, but it doesn't and hence everything is covered under one blanket by the use of the National Speed Limit zone.

There is only one national speed limit, that is 60 MPH

The national speed limit applies to all roads except where otherwise stated for example a 30 or 40 limit and which includes Motorways and dual carriageways where the maximum posted limit is 70. 70 is not the national speed limit and does not apply to all dual carriageways!

So sorry to dissapoint but it does not depend where you are, it depends on the signs!

but the sign you pass through will still look the same whether it is a 60 mph limit or a 70 mph limit?

Suggesting that it is the road you are on, and not the sign that dictates the speed.

When they say national speed limit, it means 60mph. This includes national A roads.

70mph on motorways obviously.

Oh I thought 70mph applied to all dual carriageways* unless local speedlimits apply.

*Where dual carriageway is defined as the directions of traffic flow being physically seperated, rather than just having a whiteline painted between them.

But when I pass from an NSL single carriageway road onto a dual carriageway road or motorway, the speed limit does go up to 70 if there are no signs.

Unless my memory is doing me a disservice, I have NEVER seen a 70 sign. It is always the black stripe for NSL.

I've seen a 70 before, I think it was on a bridge or flyover down south somewhere.

Nope, on the M60 at stockport, where there roadworks are its a 40, when the 40 zone ends it has NSL sign, not a 70 sign.

But seeing as my bike will only do 70mph with my chin on the tank, it isn't that much of an issue Laughing

60 is the national limit! Rolling Eyes

Motorway speeds are governed by regulation 3 of the Motorways (Speed Limits) Regulations 1974 where the speed limit is set at 70 unless otherwise dictated by (Temporary Speed Limit) Order 1977 which can impose a 50 or 60 limit.

On some Motorways you will still get the 70 sign, many are now replaced by the NSL sign, but the same rule still applies.

As far as Dual carriageways are concerned, many are of a Motorway standard and are therefore subject to the 70 limit, others like the A4 going into Reading are subject to a 40 and 30 limit.

Just because it is a Dual carriageway does not mean it has a higher limit, you have to read the signs. no signs, then higher limit applies Wink
