I think it would make you bike accelerate faster, but I think the sprockets would wear faster??? I dunno if I am right, wait for some techie like Keith to reply before you do it..... hehe Laughing

Hi

You will loose about 7% off your top speed. Acceleration will be better off the line, but not really sure how much. The chain will wear out quicker, but not that much worse really. You will get much the same effect by fitting about a 3 tooth larger rear sprocket, without the chain wear problems

All the best

Hi

The gearing is determined by the size of the front sprocket compared to the rear sprocket.

Standard us 13/35, which is 0.37. You suggested to go to 12/35 which is 0.34, which would be the same as going for 13/38.

Only down sides are that the unsprung weight is marginally more (but the difference will be so small to be irrelevant) and that you will need a slightly longer chain which will cost a quid or so more.

All the best

also what do u mean bout the weight thing?
how much should i be paying for the set? roughly?

Hi

Acceleration will be better, but by the time the clutch is out and you are revving hard then it will make no difference. It will be better for trying to do hill starts at a reasonable speed without lots of noise.

As to the weight. To give suspension an easier time, so that it can do its job properly, you want to maximise the ratio of sprung weight to unsprung weight. Bascially the heavier the unsprung parts of the bike (wheels, brakes, tyres, etc) the more inclined it is to just keep going straight along rather than following the bumps in the road (ie, the wheels will spend time off the ground). The extra weight of a few links of the chain are neither here nor there.

A smaller front sprocket means that the teeth spin faster and spend more time in contact with the chain and thus wearing. Added to which the chain is having to turn more tightly, and is thus accelerating (ie , centrepedal / centrafugal force). And on some bikes (Bimota BB1) you land up with the chain touching the swinging arm!

All the best
