My Fiance believes because on World maps, we are placed in with continental Europe, we are therefore, European.
I argued that we may be, but we aren't physically attached to continental Europe.

She waffled on about technicalities (as she does) and in the end I said if you asked most English people are they European, they'd tell you bollocks.

Am I wrong? Are we European?

Well, technically yes we're European. I may have ditched Geography pre-GCSE but I'm pretty sure this was covered > <

Personally, although I classify myself more commonly as English (at least that's what I write in the 'Nationality' box on forms) I'm perfectly fine with being described as European too. I just keep in mind that even with modern interactions between people in all sorts of places an island state is still likely to have a certain mentality which separates it from those around it to some extent (which isn't necessarily a bad thing Smile).

England isn't a part of Europe.

England is part of the United Kingdon, and the UK is part of Europe.

In a purely geographical sense - yes, the UK is in Europe/is part of Europe.

In a political or cultural sense, it gets a lot more complicated, as most of our population do not see us as Europeans per se.

European,
Asian,
African,
North American,
South American,
Australasian or
Antarctican

Pick one, coz you are at least one of the above, unless you're extra-terrestrial

I'd love to think of myself as a European, as European people are so cool, chilled out people.

But unfortunately I am associated with a bunch of arrogant, loud Brits.

Society would be a lot better if the European attitude to the world was adopted IMO.

Such bollocks...

They aren't, the Spanish for example are just as loud and arrogant, and definetly more impolite. As said before, everywhere has wankers, and the rest of Europe is far from perfect Rolling Eyes

They are no more "cool and chilled" than us, apart from maybe the Dutch, but then there's decent enough reason for that...

Nicely put.

And Jon - if we were leaching as much money from the EU as our continental brethren are, while ignoring all the rules we don't like, perhaps we'd be more chilled out too.

As it happens, Europeans aren't any more or less relaxed than we are, it just shows in different ways and in different places.
