ER-6f or SV650?

I like both of these bikes and am going to end up with one of these as my 3rd bike most likely as much as i would like a 600 IL4 it ain't happening so getting back to the real world which one should i get? i like the ER-6f in black and red and the SV650 is just a good first big bike but i don't know much about the ER-6f so enlighten me...

EDIT: i should of mentioned im going to use it for commuting and fun on the weekends and possibly a long distance motorway cruise

The IL4's i looked at (Triumph speed 4, CBR600f, Thundercat) although nice bikes, but i don't really know if i want a powerless bike on the restriction wait and get one of those maybe in 2 years time

First off, what's your budget? Also budget for insurance too.. That will help to decide what you can get.

aren't they both grp 10 ? (withthe SV650 naked being grp 9?) , the other bigger bikesyou meantioned are group 14.

Yeah I think so. Insurance will be virtually identical given a same year and same value example of each.

Well put it this way as far as budget goes the price of the bike can vary but the insurance front my dad said to me "just get what you want and worry about the insurance after" so i doubt im paying for it Laughing i thought the GSXR600 would be close to insurance on the Thundercat due to the fact that they have similar bhp figures but then again the Gixxer is a supersport and the cat is more a sport/tourer

I loved the quirky look of the ER6.
I test rode one, after having an ER5 for a while.....and to be honest it wasnt much different to the ER5. It was very easy ride, like putting on a pair of old slippers. Very comfortable and the sort of bike anyone would feel comfortable riding. A confidence building kind of bike. Ideal for the nervous new rider. Quite nippy and reasonably smooth... but as I wanted a different riding experience to the ER5, I chose the SV650. I have a 2004 K3 naked.

Also even though the ER6 is quite new, I had seen a couple of early models that were looking quite tired and tatty, already.

Quite a few people tried to put me off the sv...saying I wouldnt like it cos its a V twin and they can be lumpy... but to be honest I dont find it lumpy. I love it and glad I chose it over the ER6. I liked it straight away and didnt have any problems settling in to it. Its probably not as easy to ride as the ER6 but is great fun. Another confidence building bike, it doesnt have that 'throttle running away with you' kind of feeling that a lot of new riders fear. A good allrounder I would say.

The SV is very tartable too, you can get allsorts of aftermarket bits and bobs... I have recently put a new can on mine, and with the baffles out it sounds luuuurvely !! You can them to look really smart. I have bought allsorts of bits and bobs for it.

The Er6 being so new is not so tartable cos they are only just starting to produce the bits for it.

I think out of two you would get bored of the ER6 first. Mainly new riders seem to have them. Whereas SV's seem to attract all abilities. Quite a few sv'ers keep them from years and dont seem to grow out of them, but seem to grow with them.

SV650s for the win.. Wink

It's a twin, so better torque and noise than the Er-6, takes restrictors well, and isn't ugly like the Er-6 (sorry owners but it's no oil painting). Wink

Would've been my first choice of bike after the DAS, but couldn't stretch to one money wise...

The ER6 is also a twin. A parallel twin in fact, and imo better value and better equipped than the old sv design

So what insurance group is the GSXR600 in?

EDIT: I do know the Gixxer 750 is in group 16 so i would assume 14/15?

I ended up buying a er6n after a test ride, good price....and i like the look of it...(black with red frame)

Bikes the right size for me, 5ft7, my friend sat on it....large 6ft policeman and it just didn't look right...

I use the bike everyday, 40 mile commute to work and have never had a prob, but only been 1500 miles to date. Really good for filtering and mpg...

Overall very happy with bike

You wouldnt look out of place on a pointy sv, they are higher than the older curvies.

I was looking at a er6f today... thinking about it.. but also seen a few nice sv's also.. but im at that stage where right now i dont know what i want.. man wants me to go for a cbr or gsxer, coz he thinks i might like it.. dunno.. all i know is that i need to sell my bike i have at the moment so raie funds for newer bike *heavy sigh*

it suxs dont it... i have a 500cc at the mo.. its a really good bike..does what i need it to do as im still a novice rider.. i dunno.. maybe i should just be happy with what i have, save up over winter and get what i want just after xmas when 2nd hand bikes are cheaper..

Why ? For the following reasons :

i) I commute on motorway every other day : wanted the fairing
The SV650 has no fairing..

ii) Prefer a more upright seating position
The SV650S has a fairing but is less upright than the
SV650 ; if you'd like a sportier bike get the SV650S

iii) ER6f looks better (MY personal opinion !!)

iv) The ER6n/f gets good reviews !

Having done about 800miles I can say that the ER6 is great fun,
always puts a smile on me face. Have got some soft panniers
which fit easily due to the exhaust being tucked under the bike.

Only downside so far is that the seat gives me a numb arse
after an hour of riding, but if I get off and stretch the legs it's
not an issue : will look for an aftermarket seat eventually.
Took a pillion on 300mile round trip no problem..

Good luck with your decision, I'm sure either bike will be
great! If you have any more Qs about the ER6 let me know..

Thats great thanks for that. I'm thinking i may end up with the thundercat now though as much as i like the SV and ER they don't really seem like my kind of bike. I did have the GSXR in mind aswell but after owning an italian sports bike it does make you yearn for comfort and if i was going down the motorway this may be the better choice

Snap on just about every count - especially the seat! I'm really enjoying mine, and I'm going to take it to the continent (Netherlands and France) in September, possibly after buying a cushion.
